Keeping your Sofa looking as new

So you've purchased your magnificent new sofa, or had some furniture reupholstery done to bring an item up to the standard of the rest of your beautiful house. Whilst having new looking furniture is a great pleasure to the house-proud homeowner, keeping that furniture looking great in the long term can be a challenge.

Fine Upholstery needs to be cleaned often keep that as-new look. By following the simple guide below, your upholstery will stay in much better condition for much longer than if it was just left to degrade.

By following the instructions below, you'll notice a marked improvement in the look of your sofa.

Instructions for cleaning your sofa

  1. Take all the cushions off the sofa, including the seat cushions.
  2. Loosen dirt and dust on the sofa with a dusting brush, this will help when you come to vacuuming the sofa.
  3. Vacuum thoroughly all the surfaces on the sofa, the back, front, sides, arms, everything.
  4. Loosen any dirt and dust on the cushions you removed earlier in the same way you did in the above step for the sofa, using the dusting brush.
  5. Mix 70ml of washing detergent into 250ml of water, mix quickly with an egg beater until the liquid foams and looks like whipped cream.
  6. Choose an inconspicuous area of the sofa, such as the bottom of the back, and dip a cloth in the mixture you just created. Rub the inconspicuous area you have chosen, then let it dry.
  7. If once the area is dry, you notice no discolouration, fading, or shrinkage, continue on below:
  8. Choose an area on the furniture, and rub the cloth you have dipped in the foam on the area.
  9. You will notice that the foam will begin to become "dirty" as it removes deep dirt from the fabric
  10. Use a scraper to remove the suds
  11. Once you have cleaned the area and scraped away the suds, rinse the area with a damp cloth or sponge.
  12. Once you have cleaned the entire sofa and cushions using this technique, allow them to dry overnight before replacing the cushions and using the sofa.
