Creating e-books

Microsoft used to have a great programme for turning word documents into e-books in their free download area but is just disappeared a couple of years ago and no-one has ever explained why!

A lot of people turn word documents into PDF format and call them e-books because they can then be downloaded etc... but my understanding of e-books is those books that are in a format that can be easily read on a computer or hand held device and a PDF document simply does not provide that readability. There is something about the way an e-book is formatted that takes away all the negatives of reading something on a screen for a long time - not sure what it is but it is there!

I actually read the DaVinci code as an e-book on my PDA on a flight once and it was great. The other great advantage of reading e-books on a PDA is that if you happen to fall asleep while you are reading the unit turns itself off!

To make your own e-books the best programme I can recommend is one called mobipocket - you can download a reader and creator as well as a whole heap of books.

I have used it and find it great and it also has a few extra features like a recipe building tool and other neat stuff.

Have a play and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the heads up on the mobipocket creator. I'm going to use it to convert my ebook into a format for PDA users vs just PDF.

Great - let us all know where we can get copies when you have done it.
