Start improving your circulation today, for a better tomorrow.
I had a wake up call at the doctor's office today. I showed my primary care my legs and said " why the hell are my legs so red and blotchy!?" She quickly inspected me and poked at my thigh with here finger and said " There...see?" Uhhh....no I thought. She then explained that my skin is red until you push it, and it blanches, and then quickly turns back to red again. She said that is the sure fire way to tell if you have circulation problems.
So today, I learned that my circulation is bad. Mind you I'm 5'9, I have a big frame, and on top of that I am overweight. However, I am pretty sure that I have had poor circulation since I was very young. I can remember always complaining to my mother about the "pins and needles" in my legs and feet.
You might also have poor circulation, and not know it. Here are some symptoms:
- numbness and/or tingling in the hands and feet
- Skin color change (red, purple, in extreme cases, blue)
- temperature change in body parts (cold feet or hands)
- skin infections, cuts, or sores not healing as well as they should
- muscle cramps
If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor right away. If left to fester, bad circulation can result in having limbs amputated, varicose veins, heart failure, stroke, and so on.
So, after this shocking news, I continued to poke at my red flesh and asked what I needed to do to fix the problem. My PC very bluntly told me to quit smoking and lose weight.
Now, I'm not a miracle worker, nor do I have will power of steel, so I'm going to tackle the losing weight thing before the smoking thing, but that's just me.
I went into my office immediately after my appointment. Like I do with any ailment or problem, I turned to google, and after searching for 30 minutes, I was really disappointed with the lack of quality information on "how to fix bad circulation".
So, I thought I would share my findings with you. Mind you, I am not an expert, this is just what I have gathered. Try these tips, I will too, and hopefully we will get results.
How to deal with poor circulation:
- exercise and eat right. Start off walking 30 minutes a day, four times a week.
- stay away from condensed milk products, products with white refined flour in them, caffeine, and red meat.
- stop smoking
- eat plenty of garlic
- drink grape juice
- try taking herbal supplements (vitamin E is said to help, so is ginko biloba, and cayenne)
- Massage
- Try to make sessions to sit in a sauna or jacuzzi
- Take showers alternating between hot and cold ( gradually, no extreme temperature changes, hot first, and then cold)
- Limit your stress and use relaxation techniques.
Hopefully this article will be useful to you. Please check back often as I hope to do more research and publish more articles on dealing with poor circulation.

Thanks for the info! As a former massage therapist, I certainly recommend massage - it will help with circulation and stress management. I wish you all the best with your efforts to take control of your health. I struggle too, and know how hard it can be. :)
This is valuable info - I wonder if it helps to take the herb " crampbark" - I take it when I have leg cramps at night and it works instantly.
Daphne, I will pass the crampbark on to my 84 year old step mom she has leg cramps all the time, and has for years.
Also, study the effects of many herbs that help with circulation, including magnesium citrate. Has to be citrate. Many other minerals and herbs help with circulation and heart. http://www.level1diet.com has more information. Anti-inflammation foods such as vegetables and berries are very good; check it out!
I also have poor circulation just the last few years in my legs. I find that walking is crucial.
HI THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION IT IS REALLY HELPFUL. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY LEGS FOR OVER 20 YEARS NOW. THREAD VEINS, SPIDER VEINS, MY LEGS SWELL UP AND PUMP BLOOD TO SPIDER VEINS WHICH THROBES AT THAT TIME OF THE MONTH, THEN I HAVE TROUBLE WALKING. I HAD TO GO PRIVATE FOR A WHILE TO HAVE SOME SPIDER VEINS REMOVED BUT I COULD NOT AFFORD THE TREATMENT. I WENT TO DOCTOR AGAIN AND AGAIN, HE SAID IT WAS MY WEIGHT, AND PREGNACY. I WEIGHT WAS 9 ST AT THE TIME. MY YOUNGEST IS NOW 14, STILL I HAVE TROUBLE, I VISIT THE GYM 3 TIMES A WEEK TO STRENGHTEN MY KNEES AND LEGS BUT AFTER A SHOPPING SESSION LAST WEEK I NOW HAVE PAINS IN MY LEGS ALL DAY, AND A GREEN VEIN PERTRUDING FROM BEHIND MY KNEE WHICH KILLS. I STARTED TO TAKE ASPRIN AS I READ IT HELPS WITH CIRCULATION. I LET YOU KNOW.
Thank you VERY much..i have been plagued with bad circulation for a year..was afraid i was having a stroke..it gets instantly worse after a cigarette.. thanks for the info!
Hi thankz for the info!
Thanks for the info its really helped. The tops of my legs get as cold as ice and I have red blotchy patches on my lower left leg. Have been worried about this for a while but not bothered to go to the doc. I shall start walking everyday and as I am 2 stone overweight must do something about that as well. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for the info!! Like you I have been searching and searching for answers and can't find any til now. I had open heart surgery 1 and a half years ago and have reddish purple spots on my ankles. I have gained 35# in 4 years 20 of it in the last 2 years. I already quit smoking 3 years ago but I knew it had something to do with the weight. These spots bug me alot. They are the size of a half dollar. Wish me luck on losing and getting back into shape. I feel like such a fatty right now. Take care Best of luck to you.
Thanks for all the helpful information guys, i've had cold hands and feet for as long as i can remember. hands are always cold, feet seem to have cold sweats all the time. but i do exercise regularly and eat well, i've always put it down to me being 6ft 5. there is the rare occasion where i feel fine and im certain it is because of what i have eaten prior. i think diet is very important as to how you feel physically and mentally.
dont smoke!
This all confuses me. I stay cold but my hands and feet will hurt from the cold. My foot will hurt from the elastic in socks. I assumed I had poor circulation but I eat pretty healthy, I take vitamins, supplements and get exercise. I am 5'1 and weight 116. I'm not sure what else I can do to fix this. I do not want to take medicines. I'm just so tired of being cold when everyone else is hot. Anyone have any other suggestions?
I've been a skier since I was around 4 years old back in the dark ages of the early 1960's, when migration was made from the leather lace-ups (dual sets of laces!) to the first of the hard plastic buckle-boots (as they were called back in the day). My feet run EXTREMELY wide - EEEE - and again, back in the day, there was limited availability of proper boot fitting. As kids in Maine (the Wind Chill Factor State), we'd ski from the time the lifts open, grab a quick lunch, and head back out again until they closed around 4PM. I remember feeling my feet go numb over and over again, and get the pain, then during the lunch break and after lifts closed, dreading the removal of the boots because you just KNEW the pain which you were gonna feel as your feet warmed up as they returned from the numbness phase. To this day - now some 40 years later - my feet are always cold, unless it's 85 degrees with 85 percent humidity. I'm wearing two pairs of socks fall, winter, and spring. If my feet get the least bit cold, they'll start a vicious circle of cold sweat, wet, and colder again. Recently I've started using foot creams featuring the amino acid L-Arginine, which is supposed to be a naturally-occurring circulation regulator. It SEEMS to be making a difference, but I'm not sure yet. Anybody in cold climates: BE SURE to wear proper-fitting clothing. There is no honor in "being tough" at the expense of your personal health. Not unless it's a matter of life and death. Be safe, y'all.
hi. I am 29 y/o, I am 5'10, very slender and in shape. For a long time now when standing or walking for long periods of time my lower legs (more so on my left leg) and the tops of my feet get REALLY red and blotchy (it is really embarassing if I am wearing shorts or a skirt)and they also feel hot to the touch but do not hurt or itch. Once I get off my feet for 15-20 mins it goes away. This really worries me and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this issue for me??
Thanks,
worried
Sorry--I forgot to mention that this will also occur when I am taking a warm-hot shower.
thanks
I have lots of these symptoms but I'm only 14 and don't smoke and I'm not thin but I'm not what you'd call fat either! I get pins and needles in my hands and feet and in winter my hands go funny colours- blue and orange! Should I be going to the doctor?
thanks for sharing
You can also do some tests to find out any underlying causes or associates diseases..
you can wear special tight socks and weight loss is essential, of course
Hi, i'm 23 and not overweight. I eat really well, plenty of garlic, take my vitamins and walk to work 3 times a week (about 40 min round trip). After all this i still suffer from mild anemia and bad circulation! My bum and thighs are always freezing and red/purple. Also the backs of my calves are the same with some white blotches on. I get pins and needles in my legs and feet if i sit on the loo for more than 2 mins and if i rest my head on my arms my hand and arm goes numb! I even did massage on my legs but to no avail. What more can i possibly try or do?! Thanks, lauren x
wow, interesting reading for sure, im here cause i have bad circulation due to a lack of oxygen because i have an extremely common disease that for 6 out of 10 people who have it, go undetected. sleep apnea is a very serious disease that i didn't find out that i had for my whole life until 3 years ago because of my mother who has had it for years. basically you stop breathing during sleep because the muscles in your throat are not strong enough to hold themselves open so your oxygen is being stripped from your brain leaving you dizzy and unrested and all the other things that follow a bad rest or no rest at all. now i've learned that this can lead to heart disease. i've never had colored blotches, but i can't make a fist without my fingers becoming painfull pieces of wood, stiff and soar. for those who don't smoke and can't seem to find a cause PLEASE go to your doctor and make sure you get an answer. some sort of possibility cause every doctor i've ever seen has told me im to young or not a possible candidate for anything that im actually suffering with. all the doctors that i've told i had sleep apnea would never believe me if it weren't on paper cause it's rare for people who aren't overweight or middle-aged. i would've only lived to be 28 if i was lucky, living with this problem unnoticed. i intend to look into every single thing i can do to reverse this bad circulation because neither of my jobs will keep me around if i keep dropping stuff all the time that isn't even heavy. worst part is i've had a cpap machine for over a year now, and there is an improvement, but i suffer from a SERIOUS lack of rest. GO TO YOUR DOCTOR. the one thing i can definetly say is that i strongly dislike alot of people, but i would NEVER WISH WHAT I'VE BEEN THROUGH UPON A SOUL!!!!!!!!!!!

I have noticed that sufferes of mild chronic dissociation often have poor circulation:
http://hubpages.com/hub/Finding-Ones-Self---Recove
Basically, it is a chronic level of background "fight or flight" response, which channels blood from the extremities to the heart and lungs in preparation for running or fighting, but is only supposed to do so for a few mintues at a time, not every waking moment.
