How to prevent suicide
75How to avoid committing suicide
The major reason people commit suicide is because they are faced with difficult and painful situations they are not prepared to handle and do not believe they can ever overcome. Although mental instability could also cause one to commit suicide that most people who commit suicide are motivated by on going painful experiences they fear they cannot live with. From the terminally ill patient who requests for euthanasia to the bank executive who jumps off a sky scrapper because of a scandalous fraud or error he is the cause of, one wonders if many people come to life prepared only for the good times. A painful episode was played in early 2009 when a so called bullied employee killed himself after he had murdered his wife and 4 children the reason for his action stemmed from work place bullying he was subjected to by his boss. Indirectly he had accused his boss of being the cause of his family’s murder suicide despite not being a clear case of persecution that could lead to such an act. So primarily when one is faced with hard times he cannot cope with and doesn’t see a way out at least for sometime to come, he naturally will be induced by thoughts of committing suicide.
Hard times come and go but many people aren’t prepared to face them. Hard times could range from being stock clueless and helpless in a very challenging situation you are not prepared for such as bankruptcy, sudden unemployment, death threats from criminal gangs or simply depression or stress that comes from being put through a lot in a very short time.
Causes of hardships and why we have hard times
Typically hard times are caused by self indulgence or misuse of opportunities or even substituting priorities for frivolities. Some times though hard times are caused by misfortune like being at the wrong place at the wrong time or hanging out with the wrong people.
How the thoughts of suicide are induced
When one goes through a lot of hardship and pain it tends to weaken the resolve of that person to live through another day. This process leads to a state of hopelessness and grieve which makes the victim feel passing everyday is another long tortuous process that will only aggravate the pain being experienced.
Who is immune to committing suicide?
Not everyone will be pushed to the wall to the point of committing suicide. People with lots of purpose and self belief and plenty of maturity will rather strive for a way out of their hardship than opt for the cowardly suicide approach. These people are usually strong willed and have had sufficient practice of facing challenges of various kinds hence they are immune to such thoughts.
Solutions to handling tough times and hardships
First see yourself as being greater than the situation. You can only do this if you love your self and know that your life has a lot to offer to mankind. It would be selfish and unfair of you to deprive mankind of your services. Tough situations don’t last but tough people do always recite this maxim to yourself whenever you are faced with anxiety or grief.
Avoid the source or cause of tension until all is settled
If you feel thoroughly abused, threatened or aggrieved, what you must do in order not to experience suicidal thoughts is to physically avoid the cause of pain if it is a human being (that means resign from a work place were the boss bullies you because he thinks he is your god) or learn to live or adapt to the pain if it is physiological or emotional (some people will rather die than be invalids while some others will beg for more life if they could have it whether or not they become permanently disabled). You will be surprised by how quickly your mind will fail to recognize injury once you insist you will persevere.
See the situation for what it really is
You are just going through a major crisis and unless you insist it is just a crisis you risk overrating the problem and giving yourself too much to worry about. Suicidal thoughts are the outcome of you agreeing that the situation is beyond you.
Take time out by giving yourself a break
The saying goes ‘when the going gets tough, only the tough get going’. Give yourself a break, acquire new hobbies, join support groups, make new friends, change work place or residence or even a career if you have to just give yourself a break always remembering that you have to live life to its fullest.
Conclusion
Suicidal thoughts are self induced because they are the outcomes of what we accept as fact for ourselves and the challenges we face. Insisting on not being at the receiving end of any battering will always put you head and shoulders above the worst sort of maltreatment you could ever face. Life is worth having and worth living even with much pain. Lastly all suicide is motivated by fear of the undesirable even if it is imagined.
