How to discipline yourself into

There is a technique used with raising children. Don't tell them what time to go to bed, tell them what time they must get up. And then enforce it. If you enforce them getting up at a certain time, they will figure out on their own that they need to go to bed at a certain time.

The same holds true with adults. If you force yourself to get up early, you will not have any trouble going to bed early.

So the first step is to make a commitment to get up at a certain time. The next step is find a reason to get up early. If you can find a good reason and attach some emotional benefit to it, you will find it works much easier. You need to develop a ritual about getting up. Have a specific reason for getting up at a certain time and follow that ritual.

Here is what I do. I decided a few years back that I wanted to devote a half hour per day to self study, self-improvement. But when I tried to do it in the evening, there were too many interruptions. The phone, something to discuss with my wife, etc. So I decided to get up half hour earlier. There were never any interruptions. So I get my self-improvement time in each and every day without interruptions. It has made a substantial difference in my life. I read an average of one book per week.

I highly recommend that you develop an "early to bed, early to rise" routine. To do it, you need to decide what time you want to get up and the reason you want to do it - you will need a strong emotional reason to do this. If you do this, getting to bed early will take care of itself. Your body will tell you what time to go to bed.

If you will devote half an hour each morning to self improvement, you will explode your personal growth. There is no better habit you could develop than to devote half an hour first thing in the morning to self-education, self-improvement.

I think this is really wonderful advice! I have been a night owl for years, and still struggle with getting to bed in time to get enough rest for the next work day. I'll take this into serious consideration! THANKS!

I am currently regularly getting up at 4:30am - and I have always been a nightowl! The motivation - a job that starts at 5am! And its hot here at the moment - mid-30's (C not F) and we don't have aircon so its not much of a problem - getting out of bed - the job only needs my body not my brain - so it wakes up just about when I finish - 8am - all very efficient really ROTFL!

Great advice... I've been trying to get on a better schedule for a while. Sounds like I'm implementing a new wake-up time!
