How to Fix Your NAT Type for Xbox Live

If your Xbox Live Nat Type is Closed:

  • You experience the following symptoms:
    • When you try to play a game together with a particular friend, you cannot join their game or they cannot join yours.
    • You cannot hear a particular player although you can see that the player is talking.
    • You cannot accept a game invitation.
  • When you test your Xbox LIVE connection from the Network Settings screen, a yellow warning triangle appears between the Internet icon and the Xbox LIVE icon.

Well I am about to show you how to fix your Strict NAT type and change it to Open.

Testing your Xbox Live for which NAT type you have

Restart Your Network Equipment

In many cases, restarting your modem, router, and other equipment (also called "power-cycling") can fix the problem. This involves turning each piece of equipment off and back on in sequence. If you haven't done that already, give it a try now.

If this doesn't work go down for more solutions.

Enable UPnP on your router

UPnP can help make sure NAT works correctly for Xbox LIVE. Usually, this can be set on your router configuration web page, which is supplied by your router manufacturer.

Look for the UPnP setting on the configuration page. When you find it, set it to Enabled, On, or similar. The exact setting varies by manufacturer and model. Then try to connect to Xbox LIVE again on your console.

If this doesn't solve it the continue on for more solutions.

Examine the computer firewall settings

If you connect to Xbox LIVE by using your computer, check whether you are running personal firewall software. Programs such as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, McAfee Security Center, Trend Micro, or BullGuard may block access. If your firewall software is blocking access to Xbox LIVE, you may have to open specific ports to enable Xbox LIVE traffic to "flow through" the firewall.

Enable Port Fowarding on your router

Go to the admin settings on your router, and enable port fowarding. If you need help accessing your admin settings try searching your brand of router following the words admin panel ip. So like this, "Netgear router admin panel ip address". Netgear, Linksys, and Motorola are the easiest ones to locate.

Enable the following ports in the port fowarding:

  • TCP 80
  • UDP 88
  • UDP 3074
  • TCP 3074
  • UDP 53
  • TCP 53

This is the method that fixed my NAT type for me, I hope it fixes yours too!

This is what it looks like if it is Closed or Moderate
