I haven't had these issues for a long time, but I remember those days. If you have your sights set on one particular guy, it helps if he already knows you. If he does not know you, then it is a bit more tricky. If he is already going out with someone else, or has already indicated to you that he despises you or dislikes you, then you may be fighting a lost cause.

In my experience, I have found that being direct with someone is usually the best approach. If he doesn't know you, see if you have friends in common that might introduce you.

If not, it is all up to you. Introduce yourself, and tell him that you find him interesting, and try to start a conversation. As you get to know him, and if things are going well, let him know you would like to go to the dance, and ask if he would accompany you.

If his response is good, you may have your date. If not, do not throw yourself at him and hound him. Most guys response, when chased by a girl, is to run the other way.
