How to get more mileage from your car
521. Slow down. Cars are designed for peak efficiency at about 55 MPH. Every 5 MPH you travel will cost you about 30 cents more per gallon of gas.
2. Stop tailgating and don't make quick accelerations. If you can find the right speed where you don't have to tap on the gas or brakes but move along at a steady speed, you'll conserve gas.
3. If at all possible, avoid driving during rush hour traffic. If you are luckly, you can telecommute.
4. The more weight you have in the car, the more gas it takes to get it moving. Look in the trunk of your car and get rid of unnecessary weight.
5. Keep your car tuned up.
6. Replace the air filter when it gets clogged up. Cars need air to work with fuel and if it has to struggle to breathe, you end up paying for it with a higher gas bill.
7. Make sure your tires have the right amount of air based upon the label that can be found in the door jam on the driver's side of the car. Do not over inflate your tires because they'll go bald in the middle and you'll have to replace all four tires.
8. Use the motor oil your car's manufacturer recommends. They made the car so they should know.
9. Avoid using the roof rack because it creates air resistance when driving. If you can, get rid of the roof rack.
10. Avoid driving up hills when possible because it takes more gas to go up a hill than down a hill. When going down a hill, coast but obey the speed limit.
11. Use the cruise control when you are driving on the freeway.
12. Use overdrive if your car has it. What really kills mileage is high revolutions per minute (RPM). If you can monitor the engine speed by watchig the tachometer. Keep it low and you burn less gas.
