Very interesting question: How to get over a fear of doctors? Let me begin with another question and then I will explain why I ask. Why get over a fear of the Doctor? Now I do not ask this being flippant. I am being very serious.

Do you have a reason you feel you need to see a doctor? If you are pregnant or feel that there is a serious reason to go then it is a simple decision. Is your fear of whatever you are worried about larger than your fear of the doctor?

Personally I have seen a "Western Medicine Practicing Doctor" during my pregnancy and that is it over the past 10 years. I did this not for me, but I wanted to make sure that IF something had happened during the birth that I was somewhere they could attend to it immediately. Other than that it was lip service.

I have had VERY bad experiences with Doctors throughout my life. Let me tell you a little of where my fear comes from and why I feel that it is vital for our safety to have a healthy fear of doctors. When I was in college I had major issues that I underwent every test to explain why I was having debilitating pain every time I ate. They did CT's, ultrasounds, MRI's, Barium, etc. The final conclusion they gave me was as follows:

First they said I had gall stones and removed my gall bladder. They did that which did nothing. They then decided that I needed to remove an Ovary. After all they had clearly misdiagnosed the gall stones. At this point I made it clear there was no way I would allow them to remove an ovary. Which they then told me I would be unable to have children without it (I did NOT have that surgery and my daughter is a honeymoon baby). After this they tried to put me on Elvil, telling me it was help to slow my metabolism. Well after researching I found that it is an anti depressant. I was not then nor now do I suffer from depression.

This occurred during my last year of college and as those who have read my other work know, my degree is in Sports Medicine. So I was pretty much stuck. My degree was in a field that I was losing faith in rapidly. Still I got a job in a chronic pain clinic after college. This was honestly one of the worst experiences of my life. I worked with the number one chronic pain doctor in Charlotte, and was absolutely repulsed at what I saw. In my year at the clinic there was ONE case where I actually made a difference. ALL the others were on so many medications that they had no idea what was going on and would be that way for the rest of their life.

So this brings us to today. I am an avid believer in Chiropractic care. Now my Chiropractic doctor has sent many of his patients to "doctors" if that is what they felt they needed. Personally I just like the idea of my body healing itself. It is that simple.

My daughter is not vaccinated (registered with the state), and please feel free to read my views on it and why there is not space here to write it all. But the short version is I feel our bodies are meant to get sick. Does this mean that we like it? Of course not! BUT it is natural. It is how we build our immunities to various things. I don't think a shot is the way to do that.

We have actually had Pediatricians tell us that they WON'T see our daughter because we are choosing not to vaccinate. They "don't make enough on her" to see her. We have had her checked and she is healthy, but there is no reason for them to see her every month.

Studies have shown that children under 4 should not take medications. This was on MSN. Yet doctors prescribe them things all the time. At birth they wanted to give her eye drops. I am sure anyone with a child recently knows the ones I am talking about. They tell us, "if you don't they can go blind from the bacteria in the birth canal." The fact is they are ONLY good for Syphilis. So why do they give them to EVERY baby born? To quote the hospital, "It is more cost effective than testing the mother. The drops they charge $200+ per eye, where as a test is only $50."

So the bottom line in my opinon is that you are very smart to have a fear of doctors. The treatments are often more deadly than what they are treating for, Chemo is a prime example of this. Again thsi is not always the case, and if you need surgery or emergency care then US doctors are the best in the world. Other times, your fear is justified and listen to it. Too often we listen to what society tells us is "right" when our bodies and our minds know quite a bit if we step back and listen.
