How to get rid of fear

Fear is an emotion that we feel. We have to examine our minds and deal with it. We can feel fear in two ways. When we want to show reverence to God, or someone we respect, we can fear about displeasing them. This is a healthy fear and not one that can harm us. The other type of fear is one that can be a frightening feeling due to something we experience. We can also feel fear from people who might steal from us, rob us, rude to us and threaten us. If someone experiences this at a young age, it can leave them with a lot of feelings of insecurity.

When we fear God, we strive to do what is right to please Him. We want to know Him, to do good things and think of Him. Similarly, when we love our parents, our spouse, we want to please them. We are afraid to do something that will hurt them. This type of emotion of fear is a good feeling to have. Fear also act as a signal to warn us about things that can hurt us. For example, you are at the edge of a cliff, fear steps in to warn you that you can fall off and be killed. If you fear, you will follow certain instructions, when going near to rivers or lakes, so you cannot drown.

Fear is not necessarily bad. But bad experiences can make us fearful and we can develop feelings of insecurity as we grow older. When you are bullied in school, this can cause fear in you and can cause you to have nightmares. If people only insult you and say negative things to you, especially close family and friends, this can really build up a lot of fear in you. Suddenly as you are growing up, you will find that your life is controlled by fear. You are not sure what you have done to deserve any of this. But fear is taking over your life.

The environment you find yourself in, can contribute a lot of fear in you. Sometime you do not feel safe at a certain place. You might not feel comfortable being around certain kind of people. People can threaten you, deceive you and betray you. All these things can mount up to make you fearful. Can you set yourself free from these fears? What do you have to do? It is most advisable to move out from such an environment that make you feel fearful. But this is an emotion you feel, so this problem has to be dealt with from within.

You have to clear you mind and thinking from all the things that bring fear to your mind. This is done by first examining the reasons why you feel fearful. The next thing is to read religious scriptures to penetrate your emotions and replace it by what you read in these good texts. I find that many books in the Bible: the psalms, proverbs, Isaiah, the New Testament have great words, to heal the mind regardless of religion. 

As a matter of fact, any religious book that we read and think about that have wisdom will strengthen our minds against weak emotions like fear. Prayer can help relieve you of fear. But to replace your fearful emotions, you need to saturate your mind with good thoughts by studying great scriptures. Attending religious functions where you feel at peace is an additional remedy for fear. Making friends with knowledgeable people, who understand religious scriptures will further strenghten your mind. Fear need not cripple our minds. It may take some time, but we can be free from fear.
