Here is some information on how to grow Oriental Poppies from seed.

If you want to have a top perennial bed one of the best and most beautiful

perennials from seed is Oriental Poppies. But it is easy to grow them from seed because you have to know what to do. And here is some tricks to

be successful with growing poppies from seed. First as always you need to have clean sterilized flats to grow your perennials from seed. Also with this perennial you need to have flat that are for each plant to grow in so that when it comes time to transplant them you can do this. Next get your seed catalog out and see which poppy do you want to grow? After you order your seed

and you receive them from the seed company then you go and set up your flat so that you can sow your seeds. First take the flat and fill it with soil make should that all the holes in the flat is filled with soil. The soil that you use is germination mix a soilless mix that is for starting seeds. After that make sure that you have the flat soaken and let them drain. then you take your seed

and broadcast the seed over each one of the plug holes over the entire seed flat. Don't cover the seed this is very Important don't cover the seed! Then mist the seed flat. Then place the flat on the greenhouse bench or if you want to grow them in your house then place then on the propagating mat with a

grow light above the mat.

Here are some poppies varieties that you can grow from seed.

a. Papaver orientale - Briliant Oriental Poppy

30-36 inches (Zone 2-8) Sun

Abundance of 4-5 inch brilliant red flowers from late spring to early summer.

Flowers have striking black on the inner part of the flower near seed head. Very rugged and extremely long lived. Moist,well drained soil. Full Sun.

b. Papaver Victoria Louise - Pink 10 inch tall (zone 2-8) Sun.

Abundance of salmon flowers in late spring Moist.well drained soil. Full Sun.

c. Papaver Oriental Mixed (21/2 ft/76cm). Orange, pink and red shades.

Extra large blooms. Standard mixture.

d. Papaver Allegro (16 in./41cm) a dwarf hardy perennial.

Remembrance Day Poppy. Strong,wind tolerant stems and huge scarlet

flowers shades with orange. For rock gardens, borders.

Just a frugal tip on the flats. You can get free flats from places like Wal-Mart and Home Depot. They usually keep them under the tables of annuals for people to use, and they'll gladly let you have a few.

I wish I could grow poppies down here in Florida. Mine in SC used to reseed every year.
