How to harvest Black Walnuts
61
I strongly suggest that you invest in some good rubber or leather gloves. First you must find some walnuts. Lots of people let you have them for free if you will pick them up. If you go looking for them in the fall the nuts will be falling from the trees onto the ground all around its base.
Gather as many black walnuts as you can into your containers. I advise you to have some 5 gallon buckets as they make cleaning much easier. Take a knife and cut around the circumference of the hulled walnut. You should probably do this to all of your walnuts first.
Once your walnuts are cut around their circumference just twist both ends and one end will come off. Peal the other part off, throwing the hull in a bucket. Some places may buy the hulls, so you may not want to just throw it away. Once you have the hard nut try to take as much of the fleshy part off as possible and throw it in a bucket of water.
As you are throwing the walnuts in a bucket of water you may want to occasionally stir it. I would rinse and drain the bucket a few times and then put them out so they can dry. Do not worry about having them overly clean as they will dry and minor stuff that you missed will fall off.
Once they are dry you should store them in a cool dry place. It can take a couple of months for the nutmeat to age and become an optimal texture for eating. When you are ready to get the nutmeat out you need to get either a nutcracker or get creative and use a rock or brick to break the nut open. It is advisable to wear glasses or safety goggles when cracking nuts.
* be prepared to spend some time removing hulls and cleaning the nuts * Wear gloves when handling walnuts, they can get extremely messy and stain your hands. * wear glasses or safety goggles when cracking nuts open.

ya here in the central part of the USA the walnut trees do fine. I have some sitting outside I have been meaning to plant but the chipmunks and squirrels have been taking them off the picnic table and feasting on them.
My father-in-law thought he was soooo smart after he picked some in their backyard. He put them in the washing machine and cleaned them. My husband's mother almost was a widow. She raced downstairs expecting to see a stained machine. It was sparkling clean. He did decide never to do that again.
Good hub!
lol thanks. Ya I managed to stain one of my hands pretty good, I guess the knife knicked the rubber gloves pretty good. I figure next time I will get some thin leather gloves over rubber gloves. I am quite suprised that it did not ruin the washing machine.
