There alot of companies that offer free hosting. They aren't all that good though (believe me I have tried them all).

Some offer free hosting, with 'forced ads' this means that they will put their own adverts, including google adsense on your site. This won't always make users very happy, especially due to the fact that they want to use their own adverts.

Some free hosting is very basic, and has no php or sql, so uploading files can be more difficult. Having said that though they are WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) and are very user friendly, and especially great if you have no tech experience. I would personally recommend two types of systems

My first great recomendation is Google pages (you need to have a gmail account to acces it) is a great example of WYSIWYG. Although you do have to use their subdomain. But I don't think that's such a big deal. For example you will have an site that would be http://yoursubdomain.googlepages.com. It's really easy and simple to use, and their selection of web page templates is growing and some of them are pretty good. Their page creator system is really good. You just open your page and type. You can upload your graphics and link your pages as you are going along. It's really that simple.

Another recommendation I would make, especially if you are that little bit more tech savvy is www.000webhost.com they have no forced ads, they have php, sql and even if you are not totally tech savvy they do explain to you what you need to do in a language you can understand. You can host your own domain name there or you can use on of their free subdomains, which are very unobtrusive. The example is http://yoursubdomain.890m.com The only thing you may find a drawback in the fact that you can only add a new site every 24 hours.

These two suggestions are probably the best of all the free services you can get. There are of course plenty out there, but in my experience these two options are some of the best for anyone whether you know about the ins and outs of the technical aspect or not.
