How to house train a puppy
45
When bringing a new puppy into your house it is important to start off on the right foot when it comes to house training. First make sure you get a comfortable crate for your dog that is not too big or small for them.
You want to pay attention to your puppy and take them out very often so that they do not make an accident on your floors. When your puppy does do its business outside make sure you praise them, pet, reward, whatever you see fit.
When it is time to sleep or you must leave the house or puppy for any period of time you should put them in their crate. A dog typically will not want to relieve itself where it sleeps. Please make sure you do not leave the puppy unattended for more than a 2-4 hours.
If your puppy does make a mistake and messes up your floor take them outside as soon as possible. If you catch them in the act you may say something like "NO, Bad DOG", but take them out immediately. You should NEVER hit a dog. If you do not catch the dog in the act of messing on your floor just take them out and clean up the mess.
If you keep with it, your dog will learn that the outside is the place to go and you will have a house broken dog.
* Take advantage of the crate, as most dogs will not use the bathroom in it. * If your dog messes in your house enough, you may need to get something to remove the urine scent, as they may start associating the smell with a place to use the bathroom.
