How to implement a more efficient total quality management system
Total quality management (also known as TQM) is making quality awareness a priority. TQM is a system set up to start at the top and work to the bottom until everyone is working for customer satisfaction and lowered costs.
For TQM to work for your company, you need to start with a few simple changes. That means everyone changes, if someone feels that they are the exception, TQM will not be able to work.
First you need to think of a strategy, if you have one in place re-think it. Thinking strategically will get you going the right way. Have a plan and be well organized. You will know better where you need to start and what changes to work on first.
Never fear change. Change is a fact of life and improvements will come with changes in attitude, production, and process. Let change be exciting and it can give you something to look forward to as you see the goals change bring about.
Be sure you know your customers. Know your repeat customers, and know who you want to be your future customers. Know what they should expect and what you can offer them. Know how you can give them what they expect without error.
Extra Information
- Total Quality Management
This site has many articles on Total Quality Management as well as many other manufacturing subjects.
Set requirements for your employees for customers. Have a standard that must be upheld by your employees. Your customers will notice. Quality can be managed, and it has to be for the improvement of a company.
Keep your focus on prevention. It is more cost effective to prevent a problem or a mistake than it is to try to correct one. Notice what is being wasted. Help employees be conscious of not wasting. Lower costs are part of your goals, waste is a cost that is totally unnecessary.
Be always improving. Find a system that can help your company continuously be headed in the right direction. The right information can make changes, but the right information given continuously, all of the time, can make tidal waves of changes.
Work on improving your process. Find a process that can be duplicated and implement it. Duplication leaves the least amount of room for variation. Methodology is a great step to improving your company, keep it in your focus.
Make sure that your focus is overall. Improvements need to be throughout the company. Have goals for individuals, areas, and as a whole. Goals are to be met, they are not optional. Keeping everything in focus will help you to not leave anyone, or any process, behind.
Management must be able to be leaders. Give your employees someone they can follow. Keep your management involved in all changes and processes. There shouldn't be any barriers between employees. Everyone should feel united in teamwork, all seeing the same goal ahead.
Don't forget the most important parts of running a business. When you are improving, don't push aside ethics, integrity, or trust. These are what bring your customers back. Keep a focus on training, teamwork, and leadership. This will keep you all unified. And remember the importance of recognition and communication throughout your entire organization. Never leave anyone behind, work and grow together.
If the sound of total quality management sounds to abrasive, consider using quality management when talking with your employees. They need to know that management is working hard to make everything better, but they can't fear management because it is called total quality management.

Important topic. I'm a devotee of W. Edwards Deming--"Teamwork to improve the process."
