How to invent a board game
75Create your own board game
Creating your own board game is easier than it may seem. The real trick is to create something that is marketable and will appeal to wide audiences. Below are the steps in detail you need to consider when creating your own board game. The sucess of your game is entirely up to you!!
- Decide on a Theme- The subject matter of your game board will draw people in or be something that is truly interesting to you.
- Come up with a general vision of what the game will accomplish. What are the end results for the player? What is most important to the game? Make sure you are focusing big picture here; DO NOT get too detailed yet. For example if you want to create a trivia game on a subject figure out what will be central to your game and make it different from all the other trivia games out there.
- Do a rough sketch of what you think the board will look like and what choices you want players to have. Again, not too much detail. This is just a rough idea- do not box yourself in too far
- Now it is time to get into more details. It's time to decide on how you want the game to play. Create a typical "turn" in your game. How do you want it to run? Do want players to be able to move along the board no matter what or do they have to accomplish something first? Do you want to have a choice to mess other players up? Do you want to make turns long or short?
- The next step is to decide how someone wins your game. What do they have to do to be declared the winner? Will there be a special challenge at the end of the game for them to reach first?
- Decide on the length of your game. Do you want this to be something quick or long?
- By now you should have a pretty good idea of what gameplay is going to look like. At this point it is time to come up with some obvious and temporary rules. You will be adding to these.
- Once you have your general rules in place it is time to look at your board and design it in more detail. However realize that you may still need to alter some things, so don't do it in a medium that is too perminant.
- Now it is time to take a look at your board and rules and start coming up with what if scenarios. What happens if a player lands here? How will player's choices effect game play?
- Once you think you have most of the "odd" rules figured out it is time to play your rough game.
- As you run through it you will need to fix any problems you come across and adjust your rules and board accordingly.
- Now get a few people to try it with you and give their feedback. This will give you an outside perspective. Remind them not to worry about how it looks but how it plays.
- Refine your rules and board even further
- Now it is time to perfect your game. Design your game peices completely, your movement control device (dice, spinner, etc) and create a full realization of your board
- Organize your rules and create an easy to follow rule sheet or booklet
- Congrats!! You've created your own board game!!!
Good luck and have fun playing!! If it's really great contact a game company and market the sucker!! Try Hasbro or Looney Labs :)
