Tips on keeping warm.

*Make sure you wear lots of thinner layers of clothing rather than fewer thinker ones. This will help trap the heat in.

*Keep your home at a decent temperature of at least 71f.

*Use hot water bottles in bed OR electric blankets but NEVER both due to the risk of electrical shock.

*Eat plenty of hot foods like stews and soups and hot drinks throughout the day. This will help maintain your body temperature.

*Keep moving. This will generate extra heat so try and get up and move around every hour.

Winter is upon us once again and to keep warm is vital for your health especially if your of age because if your body temperature drops too low the risk of heart attacks, strokes and breathing problems is very common for people over 60. Here's a few tips of the risks and what you can do to help.

Pensioners are at most risk. Many die each year due to general cold weather as much as extream cold weather so try to keep an eye out for neighbors who live nearby this winter when your out and about. Check that milk and mail have been collected! Or homes with curtains drawn during the day and lights off during the night. This could be a cause for concern and your help could be needed, so don't feel embarrassed to knock on the door or call them to check they are OK. If there is no answer call a relative who will have spare keys. If that's not possible call the emergency services..It's better to be safe than sorry.

Hypothermia: If the body becomes to cold the risk of Hypothermia is very great. It can be caused by the briefest exposure to sever cold weather or prolonged exposure to milder weather. If you come across anyone who is suffering from extreme cold skin. drowsiness, slurred speech and loss of sensation "not feeling cold when it is cold" then they could be suffering from Hypothermia. If they are indoors, cover them in a blanket to keep them warm. Give them warm drinks and call the emergency services.. If they are out and about try to get them inside as soon as possible and cover with blankets, turn the heating up gradualy, offer warm drinks and call the emergency services if your in any doubt on the severity of their condition.

Great Hub Mark, that shows your good nature. Not many would bother to check the neighbors.

Good hub, compu-smart. Personally, I'm warm-blooded and so I rarely wear a coat, or even a sweater unless it gets really bitter cold outside. You wouldn't believe how people I don't even know dress my down for it. I just received a Christmas card from a friend, whose first comment was: Is it cold enough for you? Are you wearing a coat?

Get Hub..It is really helpful about wearing several thin layers of clothes..as long as you don't over do it. My mom does this, but she only weighs 110 lbs....that is 20 more then when she first got here to me. :O) And she is always complaining about the cold..Bless her heart...So it has been a colder then usual here in Sequim so far..and will try all the above to help keep her warm...and feel pretty sure in your time of need...The Lord will send you your help.....G-Ma :O) Merry Christmas...Happy Hoildays

Hey William, here in the UK we have a saying "warm hands cold heart" but it's people like you who prove this "old wives tale" is bull!! I just would like to ask you one question!. Are you wearing a coat lol;)

Earthangel. Thank-you and your blessings which are always warmly received.:) Happy holidays 2u2:)

Patty thankyou. I did have help with this hub just by hearing the problems my neighbor tells me and her position which is only a carer who comes by twice a week!.

G-Ma I'm sure your mom will be fine with someone as kind as you:) Thank you for your comments and offering the lords help, thats very kind of you:).... With regards to layers I could not advise on how many to wear, as it can depend much on the thickness of the material and the individuals bodys natural temperature, so the only way to tell is when you stop shivering!! :O

Happy Holidays!!:)

Very nice HUB! If everyone would help to look after one person soon we won't have any more problems in the world.

Happy Holidays regards Zsuzsy

Very nice sentiments Zsuzsy. Some people can be very unhelpful not just because they are unkind but they just lack the knowledge and foresight to think about caring and helping others and may assume that everyone has someone to look after them in times of need which is not the case!

Happy holidays to you and all :)
