Mixed Martial Arts is the Future
I think your best practical bet to learn how to fight would be to try and find a mixed martial arts gym. Mixed martial arts is so popular right now and I have seen small MMA gyms popping up everywhere in the US. MMA (mixed martial arts) is the most practical form of fighting because it incorporates boxing, wresting, judo, and jujitsu. Its actually quite interesting to watch on tv (i.e. UFC and others) because instead of 2 boxers dancing in the ring punching and clinching, it is two fighters with different fighting styles and its almost a chess match, and many times the better fighter does not win. Its not for the squeamish however, because usually at least once a fight, a combatant gets cut open from an elbow strike or something like that. But if you're not afraid to see a little blood its really pretty interesting. The pay per views of course are a little too pricey although they usually contain the best matches live. However I know Blockbuster carries all these a few months after they are finished and Spike TV regular has older UFC fights on there and even a UFC reality show: The Ultimate Fighter, which is always interesting. Literally two of the contestants will have to figh later in the day but since they are forced to live in one large house they might be sitting at the kitchen table the morning of the fight chatting. It gives you a good behind the scenes look at how hard these fighters train physically and mentally. Who knows if you start training in a small local gym and you are serious about it, maybe in a few years UFC might give you shot.

No offence mate, but mixed martial arts, effective as it may be in the ring, does not work in the streets because there are no rules on the streets and thugs play dirty.
If you wanna really get rough and no holds barred in a real fight may i suggest the hybrid self defence system of Krav Maga:

Just my 2 cents.

to learn to fight one should consider picking one art and studying it deeply before skimming the surface of others.
