In studies undertaken by the American Diabetes Association,it has been proven that having a lot of fat around the belly increases your chance of developing insulin resistance (the inability of the body to use insulin well), diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (disease of the heart and blood vessels).

Having too much fat around a person's waist and belly can be caused by overeating and being physically inactive, and is often part of aging. People who are middle age and older make less of a hormone called DHEA, which may increase the amount of fat around their waist.

Diabetes is not just a disease it becomes a way of life, you have to change the way you live, and not to mention you will never be able to enjoy all the foods you love, though you can in moderation but you will have to take much more precautions before you indulge in a chocolate bar.So why let that happen when you can start today.Reduce the size of your belly and you will reduce the risk of Type2 Diabetes too.

I didn't know this can be because of lack of DHEA in middle or old-aged people. This hub has great info. Thanx for adding it.

Thanks for the comments P and UH -yes it's true we really do take the simple stuff for granted. Exercise and a balanced diet are the keys to a healthy body- even gaining a few pounds of weight means really does make a big difference- you feel slower and sluggish so imagine how much harder the cells in our bodies have to work to carry all the extra weight around--in this state the body is definitely not functioning at its optimum! Which is why we are more susceptible to illnesses than we would if we were eating healthy and exercising regularly?..I know easier said than done--but this is just the way it is!..all we can do is try to change our habbits for the betterment of our health.
