Baby Doll Cradle

I made this baby doll cradle from plywood. It's two feet long and 18 inches high at the head. The foot is 14 inches high. The bottom of the head and foot are curved to provide the rockers.

I started by drawing the headboard on the plywood and then cutting it out with a jigsaw. Both of the upright boards are curved at the bottom to form the rockers. I made the area in the middle of the rockers slightly flat for stability. I then smoothed the edges with a surform plane and rubbed it down with coarse and then fine sandpaper.

Technique

This head board formed the pattern for the end board, but I made it 4 inches shorter. Drawing around the curved top, I made the end board curve exactly the same. The side panels are tapered towards the bottom and fixed with wood glue and two screws into the head and end boards. Drill the holes to take the screws first to avoid splintering the wood, and countersink them. That way the screw heads will be below the level of the sides and can be filled in and painted. For the filler, I used sawdust from the cutting process and mixed it with wood glue. Then it's a perfect match when it dries. The base board is cut to fit inside the baby doll cradle and again the side panels are drilled to take wood screws, and countersunk. The base board is then placed inside the crib and then screws go into the base board from the outside. Once all the wood glue has dried overnight, the cradle is ready to be finished. I rubbed everything down with coarse, then fine sandpaper and wiped it all over with a clean cloth soaked in white spirit. Once it had dried, I coated it all with a sealant, and let it dry again. Now it was ready for the undercoat. After two coats of undercoat it was ready for the topcoat and I used a white gloss paint.

The mattress is a small piece of foam rubber covered with a piece of linen and the pillow is the same. Nanny made these, being better at sewing than I am. She also cut up some frilly material for a blanket. That completed the baby doll cradle and my grandaughter loves it.
