How to make money matter less in life

She is worth every penny :)
She is worth every penny :)

Wow great question. The only thing I have found so far that makes money less is the same thing that makes it matter more... Now let me explain. When my daughter was born my husband and I decided that we needed to evaluate the situation and decided that me being home with her was one of the most important things we could do.

In turn this meant we took a significant cut in pay. I changed to being a stay at home mom and there went about $45k a year, and an additional mouth to feed. So money is much more of a topic in the house, seems like it always is when there is less huh?

Yet every day I wake up and look at my daughter's development and think... This is so worth it! Granted I don't feel like that every day! Some days I wish we had the extra income and that would free us up to do more financially, but I look at the time I would lose with her and the time I would spend on my job. That time that someone is paying me for granted, is time that my daughter would not get.

Money is what makes life easier. I would be lying if I said that it didn't matter at all, or that it wasn't a concern. Of course we have to make enough to survive and provide the necessary things in life for her. But sometimes you have to step out of it and look at everything else to determine how much that money is worth.

I admit I have made some VERY poor choices in my pursuit of money. I have hurt people I love and care about, lost money, made money, spent money, saved money. I think these are all things that we go through in life. After you hurt someone you care about in the pursuit of money, it definitely begins to matter less and less.

Now anytime I look at joining the rat race again (which I may do one day) I look at my daughter and calculate a lot of things. How much is an hour of time with her worth? How much is 8 hrs a day worth? How much would day care cost? How much time would I add to that 8 hrs on the road? How much gas would that cost? When I total those up, the figure is higher than I realistically think an employer would pay me.

Hence I have turned to places like Hubpages, etc to try and make a little extra while still doing what we consider to be more important than having a "real job", which in my case is Mother Goose at the Library, swimming at the Y, days at the beach, swinging in the park, or reading a book on the couch.

So I guess the answer is, the way to make money matter less in life is to have something in life more important. For me that was decided the day she was born :) Somehow I have found if you find a purpose then the money will follow, somehow, someway...

Good luck in finding what matters to you. When you do the rest will fall into place!

That's a great answer to my question! I feel like lately I've been thinking so much about money (I just got a $400 carpool ticket), but I know I should take a different perspective on things and not let guilt and anger consume my life because of money. I'm glad your perspective is so clear :)

Keep in mind that is easy for me to say, not so easy to always follow, but I try. (I write at 2am while looking for new ways to earn a little more lol)

It took the death of a brother who worked himself into an early grave to convince me that its not all about the money. Once you have the mindset, there are ways to accomplish your goals. Check out this blog I published on a similar subject

If you set your mind to it, I am sure you can accomplish it. Its not easy but well worth the effort.

I think it is an everyday thing in today's world. We all need the money but we also need to consider the cost of earning it. This has brought a lot into perspective for me due to my current struggles of not contributing enough financially to the family and the decrease in pay across the board that we have seen. Still we are making the bills and spending the time with our daughter which make it worth it!

I really like your take on the hub request. When it comes down to the pursuit of money, having more money, and even spending money, it really is all about where your priorities are. Good hub!

I will definitely give importance to money because without money niether we can make ourselves happy and the person for whom we are living but its ture that we should not forget our main focus of earning money
