This is a quick guide on how to play World of Warcraft (WoW) for free. For those of you who are unfamiliar with WoW, it is a popular massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) It offers an easy to use gaming interface, friendly community, as well as fun and rewarding content. For those of you who are already familiar with WoW, you probably already know that along with the initial game price, there is a $13 monthly fee to play.
One of the problems players have with the regular World of Warcraft is the monthly fee. Another problem is the amount of time it takes to reach the maximum level as well as reach high-end game content. It often takes players weeks, even months to max out there character and only a few can even dream of being the best.
In this guide I will not only show you how to play World of Warcraft for free, but also how to have any level 70 class with epic gear, and get to experience end game content.
Private servers
The way this works is through private servers. A private server is a server seperate from Blizzard and is hosted by another indivudal . Private servers require have no sign up fee, mothly payment, or requirements. It's free to join and play.
There are several kinds of private servers.
- Blizzlike: This type of private server offers experience and item drop rates similar to Blizzard servers. Blizzlike servers include working instances, raids, pvp, quests, tradeskills, and often battlegrounds. They also have up to date content or are only a patch behind Blizzard servers. If you enjoy Blizzard Servers, but want to play for free, this may be the server for you.
- High-Rate: This kind of private server offers increased experience and item drop rates. High-rates also include working instance, raids, pvp, quests, tradeskills, and often battlegrounds. Some High-rates also offer PvP everywhere and teleporter NPCs. If you enjoy Blizzard servers but would like to level faster and get more drops, this may be the server for you.
- Fun: Fun servers offer the most freedom to players, leveling to 70 is instant and Teleporter NPCs making traveling easy. They often contain custom content, such as items, quests, zones, and instances as well as events hosted by GMs. In addition they often have item malls with a wide variety of weapons, armor, mounts, and tradeskills items. If would like to experience everything World of Warcraft has to offer without spending months of time, this may be the server for you.
- Multiple servers: Some private servers even offer multiple types of servers all under the same provider. These can be the best because you can log onto different types of servers while still using the same user name/password.
Because private servers are hosted seperately from Blizzard, you can't get banned on your Blizzard account for anything you do on a private server.
Aside from being free, private servers can offer players experience and knowledge that can be applied in the real game.
- Private servers can allow players to experiement with gear and talents builds that can be applied on Blizzard Servers.
- Priavte servers can also be a great experience for early raiders before they get involved in a serious raiding guild on live servers.
Joining a private server is quick and easy. In the next few steps I will show you how to find and join a private server so you can get in on the fun.
Before you get started
Install World of Warcraft and Burning Crusade. If you already have these installed, then you are good to go.If you don't make sure you have both World of Warcraft and the Burning Crusade installed before patching and connecting to a private server.
1st step: Finding a server
To find a server to play on either visit Xtremetop100 or WowStatus. Each of the sites have links to tons of private servers to play on as well as information on each of the private servers, such as site stats, and patch requirements.
2nd step: Patching
Make sure your Word of Warcraft is updated to the supported patch for your desired private server. Some servers are up to date with regular Blizzard servers, however most are not, so it is important to check what patch the server supports before trying to join.
To find out what patch you have, open World of Warcraft and at the login screen look to the bottom left of your screen. It will show what patch you currently have.
3rd step: Connecting
Once you've found a server you like, it's time to connect. Some servers will offer a step by step guide on how to connect on their websites, however some do not, so I will show you what you need to do.
- Sign up for an account on the private server. Account set-up requires basic information and can be done from the specific private server website. In the links below, you can register for a free account from some of the provide servers I have suggested. Make sure to write down your information so you don't forget!
- Change your realmlist. This is the only step that requires any work. Each private server has a specific address that works like a url, this is their realmlist address. To play on a specific private server, you need to change your realm list to match theirs. Realmlists are usually found on the homepage of the private server site or in a connection guide. In the links below, I will provide some realm lists for some of the better private servers.

Wowscape This server offers 5 different realms, Funserver, Blizzlike, Blizz-Highrate, Instant 60, BG-PvP.

ChaosCrusade The coolest and most unique private servers out there. Chaos Crusade offers two types of servers, a high-rate fun realm with custom content, item mall, and teleporter. The other is an instant 70 Battleground realm, which is unlike any other realm offered. It allows players to engage in huge Alterac Valley battles, earning gold for killing enemies or completing tasks. The gold can then be spent on items in the item mall. The best part is all the items are up to date with Season 4 arena and Sunwell items.

Troubleshooting
The Most Common reasons for not being able to connect...
- The patch you are currently using is outdated or not supported by the servers.
- Your "realmlist.wtf" does not have the correct IP
- Can't login after creating account
- The server is down.
- An error has occured which corrupted your game files (run the repair.exe found in the Warcraft directory).
To solve these problems...
- Make sure your game client has the required patch for the server you want to play on. For example, WowScape -> 2.4.3. (To see your current patch, open WoW and look in the bottom left) If you have patched to far, you will have to downpatch in order to play on some of the private servers.
- Double check your realm list and make sure it matches the required text file for the server. Also anytime you update to a new patch or repair, the realm list is reset. It is impoprtant to check after updating a patch. Also make sure to save your realmlist after you edit.
- You need to wait for your account to be activated on the server, this can take up to 10 minutes.
- If the server is down, there isn't much you can do. However, you can always try another server while it's down.
- Using the repair.exe can remedy this, only use this as a last resort

Do you have WoW patched up until its newest patch?
If so the, go to your wow folder, then right click WoW.exe and select properties, under the compatabilities tab selest run as administrator, then run the program. Please note this is the actual WoW.exe file not the launcher file.
If that doesn't work then you may have to use Repair.exe it your WoW folder.

I did everything you said with re-writing the realmlist and all. When I click to play WOW i see the same setup that I have always seen when I played through Blizzard's website. I wanted to use wowscape.
JDF318 I'm glad you like the list. As for getting banned, it is against the EULA agreement to play on a private server while playing regular WoW, however there is no way to get banned. And you can safely play on a private server and always go back to Retail after you are done.
Eric, after you made your account with WoWscape and changed your realmlist, were you atleast able to log in to WoWscape? The patcher and everything will look the same as normal WoW. However if you are having a difficulty connecting to the WoWscape server, there are a few things that may be causing this.
Your didn't save or close your realmlist file.
The account you created has not been approved yet.
Your WoW client is not patched all the way.
1. Change your realmlist again, " set realmlist logon.wowscape.net " save it and close it before you try and open WoW again.
2. Give it some time after you apply for a new account for WoWscape, it can take up to 15mins some times
3. Try deleting your cache folder which is located in your World of Warcraft folder. It will be replaced when you login to WoW, however sometimes conflicting Cache folders can prevent you from logging in.

I double checked the realmlist and it says exactly what it needs to be. I click on to the wowscape server launch and then a window pops up and gives me 3 options, I click on the "wowscape" icon the says for North America. Then WOW comes on, but it looks exactly like the one with Blizzard also I have to use my Blizzard username and password....On a side note, how long does it take for my character to start using the "cool stuff" any advice?
Ok, you are using the WoWscape server launcher. Sometimes it doesn't work so instead use the orginal WoW Launcher, the one you use for retail. This is the best way for logginig in to private servers, their custom launchers don't always work. When you log on you should notice in the lower right corner it will saw WoWscape.
As for the cool stuff, WoWscape from my experience doesn't offer a lot of cool stuff right away, however it has the best community. The High rate servers have about 6,000 people online, so there are lots of people around.
However for cool stuff and quick level 70 characters I would try...

Every time I try to connect to one of the servers after logging in a box comes up that says Connected and has a cancel button. If i let it sit there for a while I get disconnected and I'm brought back to the login page.
That's a strange one, I have had that to me a couple times before, but not on every server. Try deleintg your cashe folder and give it another shot. I'm also going to create a Troubleshooting section on this hub for everyone having trouble connecting.

On some server, you need not to update to 2.4.3. try deleting your C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\cache folder if you're sure that the server supported 2.4.3. and be sure to take the correct steps, original client + burning legion and then patch.

Hi everyone, I just added a troubleshooting and downpatching section to the hub.
To answer some of your questions...
Semso, Check your realmlist and make sure it's correct, patching will reset your realmlist it. So if you recently patched you need to change your realmlist again.
Also, as Adam suggested before, make sure you did not patch too far. Not all servers support the same patch and not all the private servers can keep up with the Blizzard patch updates.
Also, when connecting to any of the private servers, make sure you use the WOW.exe instead of the WOWLauncher. The Launcher brings up the World of Warcraft News and Patch screen, this can accidently patch your WOW too far as well as reset your realmlist. So instead use the WOW.exe which automatically starts World of Warcraft and skips the news/patch screen.

Semso, check over the troubleshooting section. Make sure you have entered your realmlist correctly. Also make sure you have created an account with the server and have the correct patch version to play on that server. If you are having trouble with changing your realmlist, scroll back up to 3rd step: Connecting and check it out.

Are you really sure we can't get banned? I was looking up banning on the official WoW threads and someone said something about a log Warden with an updated Ban Stick. It sounds pretty fake to me. Come on a "Ban Stick"? A speedy replay is appreciated as my boyfriend will no longer allow me to play on free servers because he is afraid our account will be banned. Can I have a detailed explanation of how it is impossible to get banned and why other may have been banned for it in the past?
As far as I know, there is no way Blizzard is able to track that you are playing on a private server. Basically the only thing you are doing to play on a private server, is changing 1 simple word file, your realmlist. Changing the realmlist lets you play on a private server.
For Blizzard to be able to track this, they would need to scan your computer history or access files on your computer, which to the best of my knowledge is illegal without consent.
I know many people who have played on Blizzard servers and private servers at the same time and have never gotten banned. The only thing Warden will do, is shut down World of Warcraft if it notices any third party activity, such as hacking programs.

I changed my realmlist to chaoscrusade's, but I can still only log in to the normal WoW! I used WoW.exe and everything, and I have all the required patches, and still can't connect to Chaoscrusade!!
Make sure to double check your realmlist after you update your client to the private servers required patch. A very common problem is the realmlist will reset after every patch. And dont forget to save =P
The second most common error is that you patched too far for the private server. Many private servers are not up to date with the current Blizzard servers, so make sure you didnt patch too far.

It's 100% legal, if you bought World of Warcraft, and don't play on their servers, you can play on private servers no problem. Since you already bought the game, you aren't stealing anything, just choosing to play the game elsewhere.
If you play on a Blizzard server and want to play on a private server as well, you are going against the EULA agreement, this could result in your account being banned, however there is no way to track it, so the odds of you getting banned are 0.00001%

Glad you like the guide Steve. The easiest way to get to 70 on a private server is to choose one that is an instant 70 server. Meaning you either start out with a level 70. Other private servers will have increased exp rates which make leveling easier, but still require knowledge of the game to level quickly.
Ali, I dont know enough about Lans to give you a straight answer, but I would think you could both play with a Lan.
Ali, you can't play WoW over a lan connection if you want your own game, by yourself. You would need to setup a virtual server, download the world of warcraft data files and host your own server to do that.However, if the LAN cable is transferring internet, you would be able to play on the same server at the same time, just not by yourselves.Hope this helps =)

Ya, to safely play on a private server, you should already own regular World of Warcraft and The Burning Crusade. Downloading the entire burning crusade would be considered stealing.
Any option for Half life 2 or battle field 2 ..? like Free server or patch server...

Blizzard really don't care if we play it like this. EXX Magazine reported of a review on all Blizzard games and most common servers. Private servers is totally legal or otherwise Blizzard would have made the game impossible to be played on unofficial servers. Private servers is a way of playing in your liking in the first place. secondly, the monthly fee is part of the system to keep the servers running. If your not using the servers why pay for it? There is also a few illegal copies of WOW but it's just the get people start playing the game and see how fun it is. in the end, for real fun they will buy the original game and there after play the game as such. Starcraft & Diablo servers will run private (legal) servers as soon as the new games come out, even Blizzard will be creating private servers themselves because the official servers will need a lot of work to start playing the game 100% online, this is for Starcraft II and Diablo III.Private servers is also a way of being used for people with high IP's but with WOW (for the first time) there ain't actually a High IP problem. And Finally, here in South Africa we got a Warcraft III private server which have more than 100 000 people registered on them and there is always a game being play on them. This private server has more players playing on one time than the official servers!!! and do you see Blizzard getting angry at that? no not at all, in the end, even Blizzard post some stuff and new maps for us on the private server. And Blizzard rated it as a Gold Server Award last year and it ain't even a official server but a bunch of guys at a college started this server just because they were tired of getting High IP back in the day, when South Africa only got Dail Up connections. But atleast we got broadband and I'burst which is now perfect to play on any server in the world. but still. Private servers are welcome for Blizzard, and it's also a way of showing Blizzard that we will go to far lengths in playing their games. Which is a good thing

I love this guide, myself and one of my buddies have been looking to get into some kind of private server, as neither of us can get a job to pay the monthly fee.
I do have a question though, when you log into a private server do you use the account you made on the server's website, or your pre-existing WoW account?
Also, my buddy wants to know if it's possible to transfer your character from Blizzard's server to a private one.
The buddy in question is currently using the trial version, if that makes a difference. He doesn't want to buy the full version until he knows whether he'll actually be able to play it.

i can't buy the game couse they don't sell it in my country, where can i download it?
I'm trying to change free servers, but everytime I log in it takes me to the old free server. The old server was not TBC compatible, but the new one is. I have downloaded TBC and patched to the recommended level as required.
The reamlist has been changed and by cache deleted. How come I can't go onto the new server? Any help will be great!

hey whenever i go onto the account i type in my password and account name then it goes to choosing my realm type thing. and then it says your account can have the bruning crusade expansion. ok all good. then i get the expansion install it and then it says *after installing expansion* you must download WOW, which i have! then i go back to try again and it still says you must download expansion. now this is really annoying. i'm using the trial version of it, whether this makes a difference. and i did patch it before installing burning crusade to 2.4.3 does this mean i have to start again and just try and install it before i patch it or what?
Ok im having a problem with the realm lists i can get it to show up but when i select one it takes me right back to the realm list over and over, it wont let me except one, i have deleted my 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 so i only have 2.4.3 and the ones below that and it stills does the same thing, what can i do to fix this problem?
Playing on a Private server can compromise your retail account, even mentioning in game that you play on Private servers can result in permaban, private servers dont have the rigerous testing of retail servers so the mobs arent anything like the ones you meet in game, what is the point in getting free gear? the fact that people with the top gear in the retail game are respected are because they put in the time and money needed to gain it, you want a free MMORPG there are many out there. private server WoW isnt WoW its a pale imitation and you are cheating yourself if you think that it is the same

I think pirates have eclipsed grave robbers for stealing excuses. Its against the EULA, which is a legally binding agreement. Legally binding agreements cannot be argued away with "Blizzard didn't make it hard to use a private server so I thought I could break the EULA" in a court of law. The judge would die of stupidity.

consider inquireing with the private server you are connecting to. most likely, in your limited intelligence, you are doing something wrong.

Playing on these private servers OR EVEN HAVING THE SOFTWARE is going to put your retail account and MORE in danger if you dont believe me thats fine but do some research besides this page and you will see how correct I am.

Have you ever had an issue with the authentication? When I sign into my wowbeez account, it gets as far as "authenticating" and then a message comes up telling me that the "game version could not be authorized"

Im playing WoW Burning Crusade on WoWscape.net! i have changed the realmlist.wtf to the correct IP. im also playing with the 2.4.3.8606 version. I've clean the cache of the game. I've done everything right! but when i try to log in, i never can, appearing this message: "unable to connect"
i thought it was the server, but not only it has been 3 days, but also i've checked if the problem was on the server. It wasn't!!!

Wowscape is experiencing technical difficulties. They have also spread themselfs a little thin with issues. Thier website is choped, there servers are being assulted with DDoS attacks, and the owner is being flamed around every corner due to some "donation" issues. They're in the middle of switching to Scapegaming.com. Untill it's all settled down, good luck connecting to it. It will be a long while.

Hello, I was wondering whether somone could help me with this.
I recently made a account on toxic-wow.net, and followed the tutorial exactly as stated. For the account setup on the site, it said to put the information of the existing WoW account.
The account was set up, and I tried to log in. However, two problems came up. The first was that although I sucessfully changed the realmlist, the World of Warcraft page came up as if I never edited the information, still saying it was on a Blizzard server. Second, I was using a free trial to get onto the account, and it expired prior to getting the updates through, meaning that whenever I try to sign in, since the account for toxic-wow and the one I had on Blizzard are identical, it still identifies me as the Bilzzard account instead of the toxic-wow account
To try and fix that problem, I tried making an alternate account on toxic-wow, but when I registered that and tried to play, the game said the account dosen't exist!
I'd really appriciate a solution for this. Thank you for your time, and hopefully I can figure out how to get this working. Thanks!

Hey, for a couple months now I haven't been able to play on the private servers. I set the realm list like normal and everything. I used to be able to play no problem but when I patched up to 3.0.2 (I think, the one that loads up witch kind background) I type in my password and it loads up the suggesting realm thing. I check the boxes then click ok and then it takes me to the realm list. As soon as it brings me back to the realm list I click a realm which I have characters on and it says loading realmlist but then automatically brings me back to the realm list. I can't get this to stop happening. I tried deleteing the cache folder, and doing everything else I could do. I even clicked repair and reset the realm list and it hasn't worked. plz help!!

alright i havea question for anyone who may know the answer..
so i wanna play on tru wow whitch requires 2.4.3 to play. i downloaded all the patches up untill 2.4.3 changed the realmlist to the one needed to play on tru wow and after i log in i still get a message saying downloading patch and it downloades a patch and says that i need to restart wow to download it. But the server needs version 2.4.3 so how can i stop it from telling me there is a new update. someone please helpp me ! it would be greatly appreciateddd

As far as I know, there is no way Blizzard is able to track that you are playing on a private server. Basically the only thing you are doing to play on a private server, is changing 1 simple word file, your realmlist. Changing the realmlist lets you play on a private server.
For Blizzard to be able to track this, they would need to scan your computer history or access files on your computer, which to the best of my knowledge is illegal without consent.

i only play on a private server (no official account yet) as it was advised by a friend to get good practice with the blizzlike p.servers first.
my question is, is it possible to have more than one private server on my realmlist?
since the downside of p.servers is several down times, i would like the option of a 2nd p.server to play on while waiting on my main one
if this is doable can u teach me? im not tech savvy so instructions comparable to teaching a 5 yr old is appreciated and wont be taken as condescending.

I'm also having problems. I log in and everything, but not too WOWscape, just normal WoW. I've changed my realmlist file but it still just logs into the normal servers.

Hey man, I'm pretty sure I followed your steps clearly, but whenever I type in the realmlist and then make an account on the website and everything, I try to log in and.. it says "Can not validate game version or you may have corrupted files". Is there a way to fix this and make it work?

I have a simpler solution. Just buy and install the game. Then when it comes time to pay, send Blizzard an email saying that the code on your Pre-Paid game card isn't working. They will usually email you a code. Do this every two months. Enjoy!
PS. Make sure you use a different email everytime or they will catch on
