How to put pictures on Hubpages without losing image quality
67Keeping quality can be tough
When you put a picture in a picture capsule on Hubpages, it doesn't always turn out the way it was originally. That is because the picture capsule has a predermined width. If your pictures are too big, it probably won't matter because it'll resize down. For the most part these come out all right.
So why do some pictures come out weird? They're too small for the predetermined widths. So below are all of the types of width you can have on Hubpages and later on are explanations on how to figure out which size is best for pre-made pictures.
Stand Alone Full Width
Stand Alone Half Width
Standalone Quarter Width
Partial Full Width
Partial Half Width
Partial Quarter Width
Partial pictures
If you click the Right Arrow (->) at the top of an image capsule it'll move to the side. The only width that changes if FULL. You can see the max widths to the right.
What if my picture doesn't have these widths?
Whatever your width is, pick the width limit that comes below it and the capsule will automatically resize it properly.
For example:
- A 800 px width picture can go as high as a Full width (520)
- A 400 px width picture can go as high as a Half width (260)
- A140 px width picture can go as high as a Quarter width (120)
What if I don't want my picture resized?
If you are making your own pictures then just make sure the image has the width you need right away.
If you are using an existing picture and don't want it resized, well then you'll have to do some editing on an image editor (Gimp, photoshop). If your picture has a width greater than 520px, there's no way around it : either you or HubPages will end up resizing it.
However let's say you have a picture that you want to be featured exactly as is, the only way to make it do that is to copy the picture into a blank picture that DOES have the proper width.
For example, I'm going to put an Elvis Presley Poster picture that is 300 by 450 pixels. How can I put it up with distorting or resizing it?
Well it's simple actually. Let's look at it closefully.
- Its width is 300px
- The image capsule is too small if you use Half, or Quarter.
- The Full image capsule needs at least a width of 520px
- The height of the image is 450px.
Solution? Make a blank picture that is 520 x 450 px, then copy paste the original picture into it.
Elvis picture using the Full image capsule. Distorted a bit isn't it?
Elphis Presley picture using Half. Sure it looks fine but now it's smaller...
Elvis Presley Poster, but pasted into a 520px white image so it wouldn't get distorted or resized. It has the same size it came with.

(which you can buy as a real 24 x 36 in poster for only 9 bucks, by the way)
What if my picture is too small for any of the width sizes?
Once again you have to make a blank picture that has one of the capsule widths. The height of the blank picture is the same, or bigger, as the height of the original picture.
Then paste the small picture into the blank picture and position it however you want - personally I think positioning it in the center makes it look more natural.

Great tips on how to maintain image quality.
Well done! I know these things, but never thought of writing such a hub. You made it a great hub.
Well I've seen a few forum topics about people wondering why their pics came out different. Then I saw the request and figured it was time to make a hub about it.

Thank for the tips. It never crossed my mind to paste a picture onto a white background to keep the size and avoid distortion. What a simple, elegant solution.
