Easy ways to scan and clean spyware/adware from your computer.

So you have a computer connected to the internet, that means no matter how careful you are, if you dont take certain precautions, sooner or later you are going to have spyware/malware/adware on your computer.

This can slow up your computer resulting in freezing, crashing general unwanted behaviour and wasted resources,as well as potential privacy and security issues, so lets fix it!

This article assumes that you already have an infestation that you wish to get rid of,( and if you have never taken precautions against it before, chances are you DO have it!) obviously prevention is better than cure, i will go into that in another article.

The first thing to do is to get a reliable, trustworthy scanner. You have to be careful with this step, as there is a lot of rogue antispyware scanners out there which are basically spyware/adware themselves just pretending to be antispyware scanners.Truely wolves in sheeps clothing!

I'm about to recommend only the best, most trustworthy scanners which i have used for a long time and which have a proven track record and great reputation among many, many users.

One of the first things to do is to download AdAware from lavasoft. Its available in both free and paid versions, the main difference being that the paid version has a spyware guard that runs constantly, but we'll use the free version.

Simply download, install and make sure to update the database so that its current against all the latest known threats. Then run a "full scan" of your computer, this may take a while, depending on the size of your hard drive, so you can go away from your computer for a little while. Upon your return make sure to click the "critical" tab and select anything it has found for deletion. Easy enough right?

The thing with scanners is, sometimes they will not detect all the same stuff, so its worth running more than one scanner. You should download another well known scanner called Spybot Search and Destroy. Its totally free and has regular database updates. Again, follow the installation instructions which include updating to the database so that its current and up to date with the latest threats.

Both these scanners will most likely clean up most common spyware/adware/malware problems. But if you would like to be even more sure, there is some other good free scanners you can use. I recommend A-Squared, which has a free version available here

After running these three scanners (one at a time of course) chances are you will have cleaned up your spyware/adware/malware problem, resulting in a faster computer that won't crash or hang randomly! If the problems persist, try starting your computer in safe mode, by hitting F8 during the restart, then run the scanners again.

You'll have now solved your spyware problems quickly and for free, beats paying a computer maintenance person who would do basically the same things I just told you how to do for free!

The real secret is making sure spyware never gets the chance to install itself on your computer in the first place, more on that in another of my hubpages!

Check out my other hubpages for more useful tips on keeping your computer running safely and smoothly! Thanks for reading and I hope i helped! Feedback or ratings are appreciated if i helped you out!

I regularly run AdAvare and Spybot S&D on my system. You may like to tell your readers to watch out for SpywareBot which is one of the wolves in sheep's clothing that you mention. Their product is marketed to trick people that they are getting Spybot S&D and they charge for the product. I have heard that the SpywareBot package actually installs more spyware on systems.

Dumbledore,

Spyware Bot is only an example of such allegedly legit applications. Adware Remover and Adware Alert imitate Lavasoft's Ad-aware software, and so on. Unfortunately, many PC owners don't have time and persistence to investigate and simply buy whatever is advertised as "best". Often, it is a waste of money.

  • EssentialPIM: Personal Information Manager

EssentialPIM is another PIM program (Personal Information Manager in case you didn't know what that meant!) These things are very useful for not having to remember 100 various things such as birthdays, meetings, appointments, to-do lists etc. You can easily make a note of something you have to do in three months time that you might otherwise forget by then. It has colour coded day, week, and month schedules. You can import (and export) from a whole bunch of other software such as Outlook, Outlook Express, and Google Calendar. You can even sync it with Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone devices, if your lucky enough to have one of those! It’s pretty detailed and feature packed with an easy to follow layout and some useful features such as to-do list, contacts manager and more. I’d recommend checking it out to anyone who wants to be more productive or simply has a bad memory! There’s a free version and a paid version. What’s the difference? • Naomi: Free Parental Internet Filter

Naomi doesn’t rely on a list of disallowed websites like a lot of similiar software does. Instead it examines in real time, all the data being sent and received through the Internet application, such as web browsers and chat programs. Monitoring iisn't limited to web sites, but also covers the whole local Internet traffic. It also allows blocking of file-sharing programs and the entire thing can be password-protected. It’s also got some useful plugins that may be of use, such as one to block Myspace access and one to hide the tray icon. It's worth checking out if you’ve been looking for a free way of protecting your kids online life. • aMSN: Don’t shoot the messenger!

This is a free open-source MSN Messenger clone called aMSN. If for any reason you want to use MSN messenger but without using the official MSN messenger client, then maybe its time to check this out. It does just about everything the official MSN messenger program does, plus some more, such as being able to sign into more than one account at a time. It supports display pictures, custom emoticons, file transfer, even webcam support. When you read the list of features, you’ll see its virtually identical to the official client in every way, but one potentially useful thing is that you can download plug-ins from the site, as well as this, its also skinnable. You can check out all the features in full and download it by going here.Software reviews of freeware software, shareware software, and web apps to help you get the most from using your computer! http://yourcomputer.blogspot.com/
