So why do you want to remove text from images anyway? Are you stealing images?

Well, lots of people do it, I guess. A lot of times, artists will add text over an image called a watermark to make it more difficult to use that image without permission. We'll just say that your brother added obscene text to a picture of your girlfriend and you want to remove it.

If the image wasn't saved in a format that preserved the separate layers, allowing you to select the text layer and delete it easily, then there's no such simple way to rid the image of unwanted text. You're going to have to put some work into it. For this Hub, I'm assuming you're going to use Photoshop or another image editing program with similar functions and options.

Hopefully it's not a complicated image. For instance, a symmetrical image, like the one I added here, isn't too hard to remove the text from, so you can try cutting and pasting. You can copy the top half without the text, paste it, then rotate it 180 degrees and align it with the real top half, over the bottom half with the text.

Another way to make one part of an image look like another part is to use the clone tool, which lets you choose an area you want to copy and then use a sort of brush to paint over another area to look like the part you selected. It's easy and more flexible than cutting and pasting whole blocks of an image.

You can also try to use the paint tool to paint right over the text with the colors you want. This can be hard if the text is over a complex part of an image, such as a gradient. See how the glow of the sun softens into the rays in the image I included? It would be hard to paint over the text at that spot. The clone tool or cutting-and-pasting might be more effective in such a case, though it's possible.

If you don't need the image beneath the text to look just like it did without the text, and you just want the words out of the image, then you can use the smudge tool or another blurring technique to just blur the words out.

Hopefully you can just fill in the letters with a certain color to blend into the rest of the image.

The transparency tool may also help; you can select the letters using a wand, then try to adjust the transparency so the letters will be come more and more opaque and hopefully disappear.
