Wow, I finally got the request of my choice to answer. Thank You!

Let me start by saying that the picture that you are worried about and want to restore can be that of your parents when they got married, or your grand parents, or a picture of yours’ when you were a cute baby (and you still love your baby- face), or it can be of your beloved pet (who knows).

I was personally worried about a picture of my Maternal Grand parents. The old and almost destroyed picture is now new with several enlarged copies been made and several of them have been framed and have found place in my house and several other houses of our relatives ( I also have a snap of the photo in my Mobile) and on the Desktop of my Laptop. I Love them.

Getting back to the point – How to Restore Old Photos and how to store them so that they don’t get destroyed.

I take one at a time

How to Restore Old Photos

I would personally advice people “NEVER attempt to retouch or try to repair the original PHOTO”. Two Reasons:

1. Trying to repair the original PHOTO will have a high risk of getting it DESTROYED.

2. Even if it gets repaired anyhow, it is no longer the ORIGINAL (is it?)

So, what should we do? Well, the advancement of computer hardware and software has made this more or less easy now. There are several photo-editing software being developed that can be used. I personally use Adobe Photoshop, which by far, is the BEST Photo-Editing Software available today (at least I believe this). Photoshop allows you to repair scratches, tears, stains and other damage, using information from elsewhere in the picture and other techniques. With Photoshop - colour, light and shades can be restored. Colour, brightness and contrast can be adjusted with ease.

Here are the Steps to Follow to Restore a DAMAGED Photo:

1. Scan the Original Photo. Make a high-resolution scan @100% and 300 dpi for best results. Save the work in .tiff file format and not .jpeg because .jpeg format loses information through its compression method.

2. Open the scanned and saved file in Photoshop.

3. Use Dust & Scratch Filter to remove the marks, scratches and blots in the photo. “Dust & Scratches” can be located at: Filter – Noise – Dust & Scratches.

4. Once you select “Dust& Scratches” from “Noise” submenu of “Filter”, a window will pop up with two control sliders. The first slider is for the Radius and the other one is for Threshold. There is another window if the preview box is checked.

5. Adjusting the Radius slider will remove the scratches. But be careful or it may make the edges blurred. If, in case, that happens then adjust the Threshold slider. This will allow the blur to go back and will make the picture clearer with the scratches disappearing. You should be very-very careful while doing this.

6. In order to remove any mark from the photo select only the part where the mark or scratch is located. Use the Lasso Tool for this purpose. Lasso Tool is present in the second row of the first column of Tool.

7. You can feather the edges of the selected area. One can do this by clicking the Feather option and click the Scratch and Dust Filter again and repeating step-5 (above)

8. If there are still visible marks on the other parts of the photo then repeat steps – 3, 4 and 5.

9. To give the finishing touch, one can crop the image enough to remove the cracks and torn edges of the photograph. The canvas may be used for this purpose.

10. One can also adjust the colour, contrast and brightness to make it look better.

Cheers!!! You have finally done it.

What is best way to store photos?

1. Why not use technology? Store softcopies of your precious photos in storages devices. Make sure you have a back-up.

2. If you still prefer to use the old traditional Photo Albums, make sure it is the best one available in the market and that it is less likely to destroy your valuable photos.

3. Do you know you can also store your photos online? Yes, use it. Store your photos on online photo albums. This has got several advantages and I don't think I need to explain these advantages when you can read this article. Correct?

I am done. Cheers!!!

Photos are the only thing i possess that i would call sentimental, and i have started to backup on more than one medium, because like most people, photos revive and give us memories of our past which can never be replaced!

I have a few photos I will be publishing here and they are falling apart, so i have i have made a few notes!

Thanks;)
