How to Add Google Ads to your Blog

When people talk about Google Ads they really mean Google's Adsense program, which now includes video and image ads as well as the well-known classified ads.

It is fairly straight forward to add Google Adsense to your blog or website, but there are number of steps to be taken and also some potential problems to avoid:

  1. Create your blog -you must do this first because you must have one when you
  2. Apply for Google Adsense
  3. Once you have been approved you will be given your code, which you can subsequently use on all your sites and even here at HubPages

How do I get paid

Basically you are signing up to use your website in the same way as a newspaper runs a classified ads section. You get paid if one of your readers clicks on an ad. The ads that show on your site will vary depending on your content:. For example a site about gourmet cheeses may show ads like those in the photo to the right. Note one of the ads isn't about cheese, its a famous management book "Who Moved my Cheese" - even Google isn't perfect! The ads will vary by the visitors location too - someone in Australia will probably see different ads from someone in Los Angeles.

You don't directly control what ads are shown. You can however control what ads look like to some extent. You can change font and background colours, size of the ad unit (square, tall and skinny, banner etc) and whether or not there is a border.

Do not annoy Google

Google has a strict Terms of Service (TOS) which you sign up to when you apply for their program. For once this is a document worth reading before you sign. There are some definite no-noes:

  • content: no gambling, sex, guns, booze, tobacco or other drugs.

  • don't encourage others to click ads on your pages and NEVER do it yourself - Google isn't stupid and they have some very good software to detect fraud because that is what this is.

  • don't cheat :don't put lots of irrelevant keywords on your page, advertising should not be deceptive to the reader.

Getting banned by Google is for ever and for all your sites - its a nasty thing to happen if you have developed a nice little earner with Adsense.

How to ad Adsense ads to your Blog

These videos show you step-by-step how to add Adsense blocks to your blogger or WordPress blog. The process is the same - its part of the presentation of the blog where you determine where ads are located.

There is a sophisticated industry around placement of Adsense and other ads on your page - the most commonly agreed principals are :

  • ads should blend i.e. be part of the background of the page and not jump out as a foreign object
  • ads near the top and to the right of content work better than ads placed low on the page "below the fold".
  • ads in the middle of a block of text can work well.

Alternatively there are themes for WordPress Blogs specfiically designed to optimise Adsense placement - see Further Reading below.

Good informative hub Lissie, I have used new tube at last in the last week, but havent tried google yet. A friend of mine was stopped from using google, although he still does not know who had been clicking on his pages.

And evidently there is no way of penilising that person.

Yes it certainly happens Eileen - I tend not to tell friends in detail how I make money- naive users have no understanding that helpfully clicking can ruin you for life with Adsense!

Lissie- I agree. It's hard to tell people how you make money online. Because it seems that people are slightly naive to the online business world, meaning most feel that if you're not selling things online, then you're just fooling around. If they only knew. Ha.

Whitney you are so right - m partner thinks I am justing indulging a hobby and that I should go out and get a real job - I probably will have to get something part time soon just to keep the relationship sweet!

Great info Lissie. I have not added adsense to my blog yet, now I can, and have some idea of what I will be doing.

Glad to be of help Peter - drop a line if you get stuck. One of the things that people should be aware of is that they won't pay out until you earn $100 - hopefully this year!

With the blogger its seems pretty easy enough. Havent used wordpress but the video explains it. Definately dont annoy Google otherwise once you loose adsense its never coming back. You will then have to look for alternatives.

Useful information Lissie - it's daunting when you start out and know nothing, but like most things in life, it's easy when you know how! I've given up trying to explain to people how I make money from Adsense - they just don't believe me.

I'm pretty new to HubPages and Adsense, and I've been noticing that, for the most part, the ads on my hubs are not relevant. This could very well be something that I'm doing wrong seeing as I'm still learning. Do you have any suggestions Lissie?

Hi Sarah it just takes a little time sometimes a few hours , days depends on your subject , vol traffic, number of other hubs published and the wind direction I think! Your latest hub looks fine now : 1"visual merchandising" I thought might be abit obscure but there are adds for it! My marketing on hubpages hub showed adds for auto accessories for a few days when I first put it up - hub caps :-)

Hi Lissie, just catching up on all your hubpages! Do you know how often the ads are changed once you add them to your site. I did something that now, in retrospect, is silly. I wrote in one of my hubs about the recent bush fires in Australia, though my hub was just commenting that the company donated to charity for the fires. Suddenly I had ads all about fire-fighting, fire extinguishers, etc. Nothing at all to do with my hub. I edited out the fire stuff, but the ads remained. Sigh. Finally I took the ads off all together. :-P Fun
