How to season iron pans

I only heard about this yesterday and then I come into Hub Pages and find the question - how strange...

I share this but cannot claim to have tried it yet - so don't blame me if it doesn't work.

I am told that if you put a layer of rock salt in the pan and then cook it high for about 30 minutes it will absorb all the impurities and leave with you with a no-sticking surface.

I presume you just throw away the rock salt afterwards and wipe out the pan.

I will add a comment when I have tried it unless someone can try it and let us all know!

It does not work. The best way to season a cast iron pan is to wipe it all over with a paper towel and some cooking oil, then bake it the oven for a while. It takes time to season a pan properly - several months of use. I use salt to clean my already seasoned pans.

Thanks for that - saves me having to try that out. I have found that usage is generally the best route in the past!

Yes, It's one of those things you can't speed up.

I would agree with the salt it and cook it method to start the process. Time and usage are the main ingredients. And never wash it
