GPS is fast catching up with the present generation and its uses are manifold. Although it was developed to be just another “map” these days they have become an indispensable tool when stepping out in busy streets and cities. Nowadays GPS comes fully loaded with information about the nearest gas station, hotels and motels.

One of the market leaders in GPS technology is Garmin. They have been in existence since 1989 and have been manufacturing GPS devices ever since then. North American users will be familiar with the name. Another leader in the same field is Magellan. The maestro 4250 series is known to be the best selling GPS unit with prices ranging in between $90-$270.

Dutch are also not far away in this field with their TomTom series products. Also a relatively newer player in the field, they have also managed to get a share of the pie. One of the main factors to be considered while buying GPS units is the POI or points-of-interest which comes along with the device. As a thumb rule 6 million POI must be present in the device and anything less than 2 million POI must be strictly avoided.

The next factor to be considered is the screen size of the product. Varying screen sizes of the order of 2.1 inches to 7 inches are available in the market. The screen sizes vary according to the need at hand. For casual walking small screen GPS units will be sufficient, but while fixing them atop automobiles a 7 inch screen GPS will be the most appropriate one.

Several advanced features like text to speech, routing of multiple destinations are the hallmarks of expensive models. Some even feature an audio book reader, MP3 player all integrated along with them. Bluetooth is also a recent addition in many units.
