Selling

Selling can seem like quiet a daunting task, especially if you are not the kind of person who can speak to people you don't know. Really it's not that scary.

One of the main problems you will come across in this day and age is that people will rely too much on their websites to do their selling for them. This is not something that you should really do. You have so much competition for on the internet and with more and more websites being developed every day, the competition will only grow.

Here a some tips on what and what not to do.

1. Ensure you are targeting the correct market. This is probably very obvious to a lot of people, but there if you are selling office products, there is little or no reason for you to target a hairdresser. They have no real need for printer toner.

2. If you are going to go the telesales route, be polite and friendly even if you cannot get to the person you want to speak to. Despite the number of companies now using an automatic answering service, there are still a lot of telephone receptionists out there, and they are not called "Gate Keepers" for nothing. To get to your targeted contact person, you have to get receptionists on side.

3. If you are going to cold call at business or residences, be presentable and have some form of indentification with you.

4. Again if you are going to cold call be prepared to have a lot of refusals, some polite and some not so. You will need to develop quiet a tough skin.

5. BE PREPARED. This is of course the motto of the Scouts worldwide, but it is so applicable for everything you do.

6. Where possible keep eye contact. People will usually buy from people that they trust. If they don't trust you, you can kiss goodbye to that coveted sale!

7. Where possible use visuals for examples or demonstrative purposes.

8. Don't use Jargon. People don't like to feel that they are stupid. If you use sentences that are jargon filled they are going to feel that you are talking down to them rather than to them. If you have to use Jargon explain what it is in laymans terms, include your prospective customer in your presentation.

9. Answer all questions without making your customer feel more confused. When asked a question, answer that question without adding unnecessary information.

10. Ask can you give them more information. Like "shall I go over the figures with you". You will usually get a positive and they will listen to you, rather than if you jump straight in

11. If someone requires more information, direct the to (if possible) another internet presentation that includes graphics etc;

These are just some tips to help seal the deal as it were, but you can do so much more, if you would like more information I would recommend this article by Nancy M Powers. She has a wealth of sales experience, and is a straight shooter How to be a Simply Irresistable Sales Person
