How to stop your son growing up as a homosexual

In 1954 the word gay had no homosexual connotations, it meant happy, light hearted or in a good mood, walking with a spring in your step.

Homosexuality was frowned upon and if you were homosexual you were ostracised from society, abused verbally and physically in the street, some people were even forced into mental institutions and stayed there for the rest of their lives, just because of their sexuality.

My Mother in-law recently moved into a nursing home because of ailing health and when I was clearing out her house I came across a tattered yellowing magazine dated April 1954, flicking through the pages I had to do a double take when I saw the headline.

"How to stop your son growing up as a homosexual"

The article gave steps for mothers to follow and steps for fathers to follow to make your son grow up as a "Real Man".

Steps for mothers to follow

Never dress your son in girl's clothes.

Never let your son play with dolls or any other "girls" toys.

Never let your son play with your jewellery or cosmetics.

Never call your son a girl or by a girls name, even in a joke.

Steps for fathers to follow

Encourage your son to play sports often.

Refrain from hugging and kissing your son as much as possible a little praise with a gentle pat on the shoulder or a handshake can suffice.

Never take a bath with your son or let him see you with no clothes on.

When doing home maintenance jobs encourage your son to help you.

At first I thought the article was hilarious I laughed for a bit and then I suddenly realised that just over 50 years ago this was how the world perceived homosexuality and this article at the time was deadly serious

Yes, I was beginning to think Jimmy's been listening to too much Jerry Foulwell.

I am afraid to laugh! I'm afraid that I would have some bias that people would laugh at later, about 20 years hence, reading one of my hubs!

Great title! And I have to ask--did your mother put that advice into practice? Or did she just have a good laugh over it?

Good job as usual, Jimmy. One of the fun things to do when helping someone to clean out and move from a big house that they have liven in for decades is to read some of the old pamphlets, magazines and newspapers. It can be real entertaining.

So tonite when I'm with my fabulous gay boi's, I will have to tell them about this maganize and the dispicable ways they conduct themselves, then I'll be forced to hide their pasties and the size 12 stilleto's.

Holy crud you worried me here!! I've heard about these kinds of articles before.. YIKES!! I'm so glad that we, as a people, have grown to accept and love the variety of social classes we have not just in America but in the world.

Interestingly, I do actually believe that environment and socialization can contribute to development of this sort. Perhaps not exclusively or primarily, but there's some evidence to suggest that at very young ages, how children are treated influences the develop of their brains and nervous systems. This is a theory at least in regards to transgendered individuals...how it might apply to homosexuality I don't know.

None of which matters in the least, except as a curiosity.

But doesn't it make you wonder - what are we getting so hilariously wrong nowadays, that our children will mock us for 50 years down the line? Maybe nothing at all. Maybe we're the first perfect generation. What do you think? I think not.

I had the same momentary dread when I clicked the link and started reading. Yes, we've come a long way when it comes to attitudes towards people who are not in the majority.

Paraglider: I personally think the whole "sanctity of marriage" B.S. argument against gay marriage will be laughed at with derision in 50 years' time. As will the idea that all Muslims are terrorists.

Exactly, Paraglider! And Livelonger.

Let's not laugh too loudly.
We blame previous generations for so many things
and laugh, without realizing that we learnt from
their mistakes.
The next few generations will learn from us,
but still laugh at our hubs, the devils!
