How to start beekeeping today
53In order to be a beekeeper, you have to have passion to get you through the time consuming former hobby which now has joined billion-dollar food industry. As anyone can see, beekeeping is far, far from the hobby it once was. Any new beekeeper needs to ensure that they have the knowledge necessary to perform their job, and that includes being up to date on bee biology, bee behavior, and honey management, which they need to learn from an experienced beekeeper if necessary. Winter months typically kill off the flowers that are necessary for the bee to live, so they regurgitate and store their own food in order to survive and the product ends up being honey.
Getting through winter doesn't seem to be a problem for bees the way it is for some other animals. Many beekeepers are farmers, so they have something to fall back on as a living when bees are not producing any honey, typically during the colder months. This hobby can be expensive, because you have to know where to put the boxes for the bees to build their hives.
Entomology is a necessary part of the industry, since you must know what kind of predators will prey on your bees, which are not limited to yellow jackets, wasps, microscopic mites, and hornets. Since a good beekeeper will want to give the best habitat for their bees and keep away pests, it is important to get plenty of science in their training. Beekeeping stretches back generations in some families, and that generally makes people dedicated and serious about the activity, which is important in any type of beekeeper training.
Many people learn through the ranks of great grandparents, grandparents, and parents and it's just a family tradition and way of life that's taught to children. Honey may have started out as a simple chore to do on the farm, but it eventually became something that was as marketable as produce, dairy and meat.
