How to stop puppy from biting

Teaching Your Puppy not to Bite

How To Stop Puppy From Biting

You need to teach your puppy to bite less and less forcefully and then eventually not to bite at all. There are various approaches that can be used to teach your puppy to control its bite and the use of these methods will help the puppy learn in different

1) Don't let the puppy play with your hands or clothes. Simply stop the fun, and leave. If biting always stops the fun, biting at hands and clothes will occur less often. This will usually be enough to stop your puppy from playfully biting you.
If your puppy bites at you or your clothing, stop moving immediately. The movement will seem like play to the puppy, but if you become still the fun will be gone.

2) When your puppy bites or grabs a hand or piece of clothing, squeal or yelp like another puppy or dog would, or tell him "No" to let him know this hurts you, and then gently provide him with a suitable replacement like a dedicated chew toy like knotted rope, an old tennis ball instead. This will eventually teach him biting human skin is not OK, but certain toys are OK. Keep a couple of chewable replacements for your clothes and hands handy in each room where the puppy spends time.

3) Give your puppy something that is OK for him to chew on, while you also scratch his back and belly. This helps teach him that some things are OK to chew on. Many puppies have learned this way to grab a chew toy before they come over to you.

4) Reinforce their good behavior by scratching and rubbing their back or belly.
Withdrawing attention from a biting puppy is also a good strategy. Become unresponsive to his desire for attention, and ignore the puppy until it gives up on biting. You can restore attention to him when he begins to behave properly.

5) With a puppy that is determined to bite, put some sort of lickable treat on your fingers, and let your puppy lick this off. This helps to reinforce the no biting ideal. Hand feeding your puppy at least some of his food is also a great way to get him used to hands near his mouth and his food.

6) You can begin teaching the "off" command after your puppy has stopped biting with any pressure, by holding a handful of his dry food, close your hand and say "off." After a few seconds, if the puppy has not touched your hand, say "take it" and give him a piece of food. You are teaching him that "off" means not to touch.
