Anxiety is a more refined term used to describe your tendency to get worried and anxious.  It is a common feature of every human mind, sane or insane.  Panic is more associated with fear emanating from anxiousness that has crossed a certain limit.  In general a person might experience anxiety frequently but panic only seldom.

There is no definite etiology for anxiety.  Anything can stir your thoughts in the wrong direction.  It varies from person to person depending on their genetic traits, upbringing, past history, family atmosphere, social atmosphere, intelligence quotient, mental ability, professional and personal life.

How to control a panic attack

1.  When you are getting a panic attack you must know what is happening.  Never misjudge the physical symptoms induced by your anxiety as some emergency medical condition.  Palpitations, sudden sweating, tightness in chest are common anxiety syndrome.  If you fear that you are getting a cardiac arrest it will worsen your anxiety attack and you might end up fainting.

2.  Always remember that anxiety attacks are short-lived panic spell.  It goes away as fast as it occurs.  It passes away quickly if you just wait and relax.

3.  Stop thinking!  When your mind is calm your thoughts are processed at a certain rate.  But as you start worrying about something your mind works more rapidly.  Once your mind traverses into a state of anxiety you are becoming vulnerable to conditions such as fright, despair, alarm, or horror.  The only way to stop your mind is to cut off your thoughts.  It is just like cutting the power supply to your mind which has gone out of control.  So stop thinking altogether.  It is a sure trick that will work.

4.  Try to be courageous.  When you are in real trouble losing hope or panicking is a sure way to failure.  Having a positive attitude and faith in yourself will surely curtail your anxiety not only during a panic attack but throughout your life.  Remind yourself to be brave enough to face any kind of situation in life.

5.  Controlled breathing can calm your mind.  People tend to breath through mouth when panic strikes.  This should be avoided.  Breathe slowly through your nose using your abdominal muscles.

6.  Try relaxing.
When your anxiety levels are soaring sitting down or lying down for a while might help you relax faster.  Drinking water can also make you feel better.

7. Try distracting yourself.  Find someone to talk with.  No one can help you better than a close friend when it comes to anxiety problem because it is all about your soothing your mind and emotions.
