Spotting Rotten Eggs

It is always difficult to know when an egg starts to go bad. It can happen slowly, even if sheltered from outside influences in a dark refrigerator. Once it happens, there is no turning back. The only solution for a bad egg is to throw it in the composte or the trash.

Even though it is difficult to spot a bad egg, there are some telltale signs. If any three or more of these signs start to show, its best to give the egg a sharp crack on the shell and use it for baking or in a recipe that does not require a fresh egg. (Fresh eggs can be a problem too, but that's a different story.)

Here are some of the signs that an egg is going bad:

  1. Gets scary tattoos to cover his expiry date.
  2. Eyes are always red and always sniffling.
  3. Hangs out with the bad eggs at the corner bar.
  4. Keeps talking about the best drugs to get scrambled.
  5. Wears a "Certified Organic" label, even though he's not.
  6. Walks around yelling, "I came first - not the *** chicken!".
  7. Says over-easy is for suckers.
  8. Flashes lots of cash, claiming he's been on a roll.
  9. Flies into a rage when someone calls him an oeuf.
  10. Starts staying out late with no explanation.

If you experience these symptoms of a bad egg, remember that you are not alone. Many of us have had to deal with bad eggs from time to time and have since moved on. It may be hard to accept at the time, but even the smell of a rotten egg will go away eventually.
