Infant Diarrhea

Our son, when he was one year old, got a severe case of diarrhea and it lasted for 3 days. We ended up going to the emergency room after he was completely dehydrated and it was a painful experience. He completely recovered after the doctors gave him intravenous fluids and we were in the hospital for 2 days. It is very hard to find a vein for injecting the IV fluids when the person is dehydrated and it was heart breaking to see the way the nurses had to find a vein. We learnt a lot during that experience and I am putting together this hub as a guide to deal with infant diarrhea and how to treat diarrhea in children. Some babies may become lactose intolerant during diarrhea and you should completely avoid any milk products including breast feeding during diarrhea. Our son had it and I stopped breast feeding and he recovered. After recovery, he has no problem drinking and digesting milk.

Diarrhea are stools that are loose and watery and that occur more than 3 times in a 24 hour period. The causes of infant diarrhea vary from teething , gastrointestinal infections and antibiotics. Most cases of infant diarrhea will go away on their own. However, diarrhea can lead to dehydration which is a serious problem. Infants with diarrhea can become dehydrated in a short period of time. Using oral rehydration solutions like pedialyte can help prevent dehydration. One common cause of diarrhea in infants is the stomach flu (known medically as viral gastroenteritis). Many different viruses can cause stomach flu in infants. The most common types are Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Astrovirus.

Call your pediatrician right away if:

1. Infants under 3 or 4 months old has diarrhea.

2. Diarrhea persists in infants for 3 days or longer.

3. Diarrhea stools containing blood or pus.

4. Your baby has fever and vomitting.

5. No urine in more than 6 hours.

Signs of dehydration

Dehydration in babies is a serious problem and you should always watch your baby from not getting dehydrated. Here are some signs that your your baby is dehydrated.

  • Decreased urination: If your infant has no wet diapers for 4 to 5 hours. Fewer wet infant diapers than usual in a 24 hour period..
  • Infant has dry eyes and crying with few tears or no tears.
  • High fever
  • Sunken abdomen, eyes and cheeks.
  • Infant is less active than usual.
  • Your baby is thristy
  • Dry skin, dry mouth and tongue
  • Fatigue

Possible causes of infant diarrhea

1. Bacterial infections: Several types of bacteria consumed through contaminated food and water can cause diarrhea. Common bacteria include Salmonella, Escherichia coli(E.coli), Campylobacter.

2. Many viruses cause infant diarrhea. Some of them are Rotavirus, Herpes simplex virus, Cyptomegalovirus. Rotavirus is the most common cause of acute diarrhea in babies and young children. It usually affects children between the ages of 6 months and 2 years. When children have rotavirus, their stools contain large numbers of germs. Rotavirus can spread easily. It could spread by coming in contact with an infected diaper and not washing hands properly afterward by touching a toy that has germs on it.

3. Parasites: Parasites can enter the body through foods and water and settle in the digestive system. Parasites that cause infant diarrhea include Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium and Entamoeba histolytica

4. Reaction to medicines: Antibiotics, blood pressure medications, antacids containing magnesium and cancer drugs can cause infant diarrhea

5. Bowel disorders: Infant diarrhea can be a symptom of irritable bowel syndrome.

6. Intestinal diseases like crohn's disease, infalmmatory bowel disease and celiac disease often lead to diarrhea.

7. Teething and change in mother's diet if the baby is breastfed.

Treatment of infant diarrhea

Treatment in infant diarrhea is to give your infant baby a lot of fluids to prevent dehydration. You can give your baby oral rehydration solution (ORS) to replace your infant body fluids that is lost during diarrhea. Follow the following diet plan for your baby during diarrhea.

Diet plan for babies suffering from diarrhea:

1. Strict oral rehydration solution like Pedialyte every 4-6 hours

2. Infant babies 4 months to 9 months: You can give your baby bland foods. If your baby is on solid foods, then give them apple sauce, strained banana, saltines, strained carrots, strained squash, mashed potatoes(no additives), rice cereal and oat meal.

3. Over 9 month infant baby: You can give toast, crackers, breads, pretzels, rice, mashed potatoes(no additives), noodles(no additives), bananas, apple sauce, carrots, squash, rice krispies, cheerios, oatmeal and yogurt with active cultures.

4. No milk products

5. No oils or butter

6. No spicy foods or sauces until the infant diarrhea subsides.

Tip: Remember the BRAT diet during diarrhea. B: Banana, R: Rice cereal, A: Apple sauce, T: Toast

Note: You should always consult with your child's doctor before starting any kind of medication or if you have any doubts.

Thanks for your post. Glad you found this article helpful. Hope your baby recovers fast from the diarrhea effects. My son lost so much weight in one week of diarrhea and it took him a while to gain all that back.

My 6 mo old has had diarreah for a week now, and I've just started to elimate milk from my diet (nursng) this weekend, but no change. Interesting that you've said that your son was not able to tolerate your milk, either. We're heading to the doc on Monday.

Jennifer,

Not all babies develop lactose intolerance during diarrhea. When my son had diarrhea, the only thing he had was breast milk so i continued breast feeding him without realizing that is causing more diarrhea. Finally I stopped breast milk, and the doctors gave him IV fluids for 2 days. He got normal after that. It is really heartbreaking to deal with.

In your case, consult with your pediatrician. DO NOT LET YOUR BABY DEHYDRATE! When we took our son to the emergency room, he was already dehydrated and they could not find a vein to inject IV fluids. Give your baby oral rehydration solution like pedialyte. A few spoonfuls every hour at least. Do not wait and take her to the doctor or emergency room right away.

Sorry the delayed response. I hope your baby is doing fine now. Let us know how is your baby doing now and what you learnt.

God bless.

I also found this article reassuring. My son had a bad case of diarreah about 2 months ago (he was 11 months at the time) and we had the same problem with dehydration. He was lethargic, and normally an active little guy, would lie with his head on my lap for hours at a time. I took him to 3 doctors and they all said "it's the flu" I was finally able to take him to my family doctor who noticed right away that he was dehydrated and suggested gatorade! I couldn't believe it, but honest to god moms..it worked! Babies like the taste far more than pedialyte and so they drink more of it and regain their strength and get the electrolytes back into their body faster. A little sugar in the diet is worth having your baby back again. I would reccommend this to any mom. OH! But if you choose to use gatorade make sure to brush their teeth everytime they drink some.

Thanks for the advice...I forgot that avoiding milk is best, because it feeds the bacteria....thanks...

Michelle, Some babies become lactose intolerant temporarily during diarrhea. So, you may want to try stopping formula or dilute the formula with water. Make sure your baby is getting a lot of fluids. Of course consult with your pediatrician right away. Hope your baby feels better soon.

The American Acedemy of Pediatrics does NOT advise stopping breastfeeding during diarrhea, nor should you water down formula. Also, the BRAT diet is outdated advice as it is not a source of protein. If a parent has concerns about diarrhea, please contact a professional healthcare provider and do not take well-meaning but misinformed advice. The baby who was made to stop breastfeeding most likely got better due to the intravenous fluids. There is not a correlation between remission of diarrhea and stopping breastfeeding. This is very misinformed.

Your article was very helpful, thank you!! My son is only 3 months old and has diarrhea. I'm going to the doctor in two days but i'm affraid it will get worse. Even though he's only 3 months should i still try to give him pedialyte? He's been spitting up and has diarrhea, and today it worsen. I went through 5 diapers in a couple hours, all loose stools.

But when i consult with the doctor he advised me that Infants that are breast-fed or formula-fed should continue to receive Breast milk during the rehydration phase of their illness if not prevented by vomiting.

Actually, breastmilk is the preferred liquid to give when baby has diarrhea. It's easily digested and has antibodies. It's better than Pedialyte. And you should NEVER water down formula!

My baby is 12 months old and is repeatedly suffering from diarrohea with small gap of few days. What might be the reason and what diet to be followed? Please give a solution.

My 13month old has diarrohea from a stomach bug. The doctor told me to weaken her formula to half-strength and give her 10ml of Hydralyte every 10 minutes from a syringe. His advice was not to wait for her to drink from a bottle but to force her to drink the Hydralyte. Anyone whose ever had a 13 month old knows you cannot force them to drink what they dont want to. He also said not to worry about food - although she is hungry and I am not about to deprive her. The diarrohea has lasted 7 days now and her nappy rash is shocking. Is there anything they can give a little one to stop the diarrohea??

wenyan  says:

My childs pediatrician told me to give my 4month old pedialyte for 24- 48 hrs, to eliminate any dairy foods and his formula but to continue breastfeeding because of the good nutrients and antibodies.
