So you want to get extra cool effects using Compiz Fusion as it’s built into your new Ubuntu 7.10 install but you’re unsure how to get more than a few wobbly windows or how to even turn on wobbly windows? Here’s the quick way to do it.

First, you’ll have to have a computer with a GPU that supports this kind of thing. Most modern computers, even those with onboard GPUs will do fine. My Lenovo X60s works great and it’s about 1.5 years old.

So, to turn on the neat visuals, go to System > Preferences > Appearance and then the visual effects tab. Once there, click the appropriate option.

But wait, you don’t have that Custom option at the bottom featuring a weird whitish thing I can only assume is a customized magic wand? Here’s how to get that - don’t worry, it’s easy.

Open up a Terminal session (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) then cut and paste the following line into it:

sudo apt-get install emerald compizconfig-settings-manager

That will install Emerald so you have nice themes using Compiz Fusion and the Compiz GUI controller so you can have an easy time setting all this neat stuff up. When you’ve gotten these install, go ahead and turn on the custom effects. Then click the Preferences button and you should see this:

From here, you’ll want to set up some themes to make your Compiz experience as themey as possible. To do this, go to System -> Preferences -> Emerald Theme Manager. Now click on the Themes Settings tab and then the Repositories tab.

See those two buttons? You’re going to want to fetch the non GPL’d Themes BUT in order to to this, you’re first going to need to install subversion and accept a certificate. Again, not hard.

In a terminal session type:

sudo apt-get install subversion

When that’s done installing, cut and paste this into your terminal session and hit enter:

svn ls https://svn.generation.no/emerald-themes

It will ask you if you want to (R)eject, accept (t)emporarily or accept (p)ermanently? You want to permanently accept it so type ‘p’. Then back into Emerald’s manager after it does it’s thing and click the Fetch non GPL’d Themes button. Then click the Themes tab and select a theme you like.
