How to use Youtube as a songwriting tool
69Use youtube as an amazing resource for inspiration. I am going to give you an example from the songwriters point of view. I´ll let Josh Groban and the song "Don´t give up, you are loved" help me with this task.
"Don´t give up, you are loved" with Josh Groban
Ok, here we go :-),
sometimes life is just beautiful.
Right now I am listening to this song, press play and let´s go:
"Don´t give up, you are loved" with Josh Groban
When I was listening to this song and writing in my blog. It just hit me, what a great idea to use youtube.com as an inspirational tool for songwriting.
It´s a remarkable place, you can find the most beautiful songs in the world and instantly hear them. Of course this isn´t all new to me, but I just have to say: It´s AMAZING :-)
I am well aware of the downside with this kind of service, when there´s something good, and also free of charge, there´s often a downside.
I won´t talk about that downside here. I will focus on the positive thing´s, the amazing things and how it might help you as a songwriter.
I am a creative person with a long musical background, always looking for inspiration to strike and if it doesn´t show up. Well, I have to find it, right?
Youtube will be a very helpful tool for you, in the future.
In my last hub about songwriting I talked about creativity and some tips about how to get in the “mood”. For me that part is actually very important. To write a great song or some great lyrics. I need to be inspired.
I don´t know if you notice, but, when I, right now, sit here and write this and listen to Josh Groban, inspiration strikes like thunder.
Maybe I should write a song instead....right now.... :-)
No, I wait with that, this is actually good enough for the moment.
We are all different in the way we react to music and what kind of music we react too.
Take a pencil and write down five specific things that you believe is bringing you inspiration. It might be good things, aswell as bad things.
As a songwriter you need an arsenal of emotions, like an actor.

Here are some things I came up with
like this:
- listen to Josh Groban - “Don´t give up. you are loved”
- when my son call my name and want to have me close
- some sad memories from the past
- standing infront of an audience, singing from the bottom of my heart.
- watching “The green mile” with Tom Hanks
You can write more than five if you like. I just want to show you an important tool to use in the world of creativity.
When you need to find a certain emotion, go look for that episode in your life that reminds you of the feeling you are after, or try to remember your favorite movie. You can even watch that movie again, or listen to music that put you in a state of inspiration.
I am shure you have a couple of favorite artists or singers or instrumentalists that make your heart warm every time you hear them, right?
Go find them on youtube, create a fastlink to them and have them in your browser as an inspirational tool whenever you need them.
It would actually be very fun if you dared to share that with us and place a comment about your favorite source of inspiration.I´d love to read about that.
Here it is again, no need to scroll to the top of the page :-)

How about a little mini-analysis :-)
Ok, let´s make a smal stop at Josh Groban and the song: “Don´t give up, you are loved”.
We are going to make a mini-analysis of this piece. You are listening to it, right?
1. Short intro with a very tasteful modern arrangement
please notice that the arrangement of a song is often very important
I´m going to talk about that in articles to come.
2. The “verse” actually starts with something that remind us of the lyrics in the refrain. It´s in a perfect pitch for, in this case, Josh Groban.
3. The music is getting louder, we are going into the “break” zone :-). You get the feeling that something is going to happen.
4. A rather soft refrain starts
5. The refrain have a very creative way of ending, some high pitched notes
6. We are in verse number two, almost without knowing what happened :-), the arrangement is stronger and the drums is starting for real, which is giving the song a lovely feeling of “greatness”, forward motion and presence.
The words of “Don´t give up...” is repeated in versenumber two.
7. The “break” and refrain number two is just a repetition, but that doesn´t matter cause the melody and the voice of Josh creates magic. No problem hearing that again an again....
8. The ending of the song is starting, with repetitions, high pitched notes, Josh singing stronger, and getting answers from a smal choir.
9. fade out
Conclusion
Ok, bottom line is: SIMPLICITY
It´s one very strong verse and one very strong refrain sung by one of the best male singers in the world....
That´s a good lesson to learn, simplicity works, if the pieces are good enough, and work well together.
One more piece in this puzzle is a smart way to arrange this song, starting in smal scale, with a modern sound, building and building, giving the impression that all the parts are new.
I´d love to talk about arrangements in articles to come.

"Play out the multimedia in our minds" - that´s just beautiful
You sound inspired :-)
You should write a hub with the title above, I shure got inspired to make one on the subject.
Let´s make one each :-)
It shure would be awesome if Josh Groban would like to sing something from us, never stop dreaming and never stop make your dreams come through.
No one is too smal to think big.
Wow, this is inspiring! I write poetry and wonder what it would be like to use video to inspire myself to write poems. Hmmm...food for thought.
Hi, makes me happy if this article inspire to some creativity and that the "youtube" phenomenon might be useful in so many ways.
If words could make a painting, this would be a masterpiece. The power of "youtube" is incredibly world wide.

Great Tips! What a beautiful song too!
If we could play out the mutimedia in our minds while we are writing each song we will dive into creativity from the heart instead of just another rhyme. I love music videos on youtube, it teaches us songwriters that our songs can come alive and impact the world. Wouldn't it be awesome to have Josh Groban sing one of our songs? Never quit dreaming and believing and taking chances!
