How women decide on feminine products.
66Not always the most comfortable topic.
Women discussing menstruation aka periods, cramps, PMS, and menopause usually do so in confidence while chatting with friends. It is not our favorite topic to say the least. None the less, it is discussed because we have a need to share our pain (literally) and find other solutions to the pain. And at one time or another each of us have been in a situation where we were unprepared for "Aunt Flo's" monthly visit and had to ask for a pad or a tampon. No matter how many times we do this, or have to purchase them in the store, it is always a little uncomfortable. Why? You would think this a natural process of a woman's body and we should not be ashamed or embarrassed. But our discomfort is mostly because we don't want everyone to know what is going on down there! The good news is there is a vast amount of products out there to meet our individual feminine needs. Now you can even purchase them online, though that does not solve an immediate need.
What are our options?
There are two most commonly used options for those of us that have a period. They are either tampons or pads. If you really need to know what a pad or tampon is feel free to e mail me and I will answer. Other wise I will assume you know what and how each is used in order to avoid graphic details.
Tampons come in a variety of sizes and prices as do pads or sanitary napkins. The most popular brands are Tampax, Always, Playtex, and Kotex. These brands have a wider variety of options for different women, body types, and well flow types (meaning how light or heavy ones period is). Some women find these brands to be a little bit more expensive then the rest and are satisfied using store brand. As long as they work! Others find they prefer trusted brand names to keep them clean and secure.
Going Green:
For the green women out there I have found that there are a few products that are biodegradable and nature conscious. For example : Seventh Generation brand is chlorine free and Natracare is organic. Both of these products have been around for a while and are just as good if not better.
A Different Route:
Another alternative (a little less then desirable to me) is a menstruation cup. Basically these cups catch everything and are usually washable and reusable. If you prefer only to invest once in a product rather then purchasing pads or tampons monthly or bi-monthly, then the menstruation cup is probably for you.
The anti period option:
As I am sure you have seen on TV there are all kinds of advertisements out there for products that reduce or completely stop your period. YAZ is a good example of one of these products. Click on YAZ to find out more about this product. Another example would be Lybrel which is another birth control pill that essentially stops a womans period. These products are still fairly new and yet becoming widely popular among young women. As with any birth control or medication, I recommend doing your research and speaking with a doctor before deciding.
OTHER ANTI-PERIOD PRODUCTS:
Ortho Evra: Birth control that regulates your period
Depo Provera: In some cases stops period completely while on the shot

How do we decide?
When choosing a product the first thing we want to consider is protection. Will there be any leakage? It is undesirable among women to find out that they have had some leakage, especially when in a place where they cannot immediately change and remedy the problem.
Comfort is another issue. There are a lot of products that can be too bulky, thin, short, or long. This is more of a matter of preference. Some women feel more protected wearing something thick or long because they may feel that it will catch more. Other may like something thinner because it is more comfortable. There are a mix of options available from thick and short, thick and long, long and thin with wings, and the list goes on. Tampons also come in a variety pack from light flow, medium flow, and heavy flow.
Price is also a factor that must be considered. Not all of us can afford brand names. Brand name does not always mean it is the best, just that it is more popular. All of these products range in price from $5.00 for store brand to $8.00+ for name brand.
Summary
Femine products are a necessity and not our favorite one either. For those who are new to the joys ad pains of womanhood I hope this information was helpful.

In response to your questions: Advertising definately plays a major role in the decision making process. A lot of of tend to relate brand name to mean better product. As far as availability, this is not really a factor, unless one is in an emergency and had to stop at a 7-11. Even if that is the case usually brand doesn't matter just product type (pad/tampon). As I mentioned before, price is important too. The brand name products are usually a lot more expensive. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.
Thanks for covering this, lots of useful information here!
Thanks again!! Here are some more questions as we cover more ground on this analysis.
1. Does aesthetics in packaging matter?
2. What is more preferred? A large pack or smaller ones and why? Someone commented that big packs are more popular because women stock them at bulk. I was advised to consider the product as toilet papers. Just want to know your opinion.
3. Do women feel uncomfortable purchasing at the local pharmacy or 7-11? Do they prefer online shopping for these products so that they are saved from the blushes?
REAL THANKS FOR BEING SO HELPFUL.
The aesthetics of a package can deetermine the choice we make. That is another reason products like Always and Tampax or more popular. We want to feel feminine and beautiful and something about these packages meet that need.
Most women I know do prefer to stock up. Going to the store to purchase them can be uncomfortable for some, as I said we don't exactly want the world to know our private business. However, for the most part we stock up just to be well prepared. Who ever suggested you consider the product to be like TP was right.
When we are in a situation where we have to purchase these items at 7-11 or a local pharmacy, usually it is an emergency and we are not paying attention to anything else.
AS far as online shopping goes I am not sure how popular it is. I personally do not buy these items online. I just don't want to pay for shipping. Call me cheap.
there is a nice hub on tampons by sushinisen in these hub pages. please check
Hi b opinionated,
Sorry for not responding earlier. I just completed the project today and the client liked it a lot. Needless to say, your hub and comments contributed a lot in getting my thoughts organized. I am new to the country and do not really know many women closely enough to talk about these issues. Web was my only hope and thank god I found you here. I even directly quoted some of your sentences in front of the client as 'customer opinions'. CALL ME CHEAP :-)
Thanks again for all the help and hope we remain in touch hereafter. Have a good day.
Well I am glad I was able to help you!
Just one thing. I felt very awkward when I wrote "Hi b opinionated". I mean had it been any kind of a noun, I would not mention it. But saying Hi to a verb is something I dont do often :-) Is there a name/nick name I can address you with?
Call me Bonnie! What about you? You go by stooge or something else?
Well, that is how I was called by my mates when I was 10 or so. I am not really a Stooge now, but you can call me that :-) Else, my license reads Vivek.

Hey. Many thanks for the informative article. Needless to say, I was not aware of so many things that you had mentioned. It certainly increased the background and context information I had. Thanks for being descriptive to my exact question of influencing factors. Mention of major brands was the icing on the cake. I wish if you could come up with some more influencing factors apart from the obvious ones. For example, does marketing/advertising and ease of availability a factor? If your preferred brand is not available, do you go for another one or search the stores for your preferred brand?
I understand this may not be a very comfortable topic for women (and I have always wondered why), so thanks again for being courageous and helping out a fellow blogger. Thanks for your offer of mailing, but I guess I will be decent enough and save you from those graphical details. Waiting for your reply.
