Hello:
Good question. I'm no therapist, but one doesn't need to be a professional to know what their body is going through provided one pays close attention to their body. So, here goes:
Menopause, The Curse, The Change, blah, blah blah! It's nature, and the more you try fighting it, the more you lose. Menopause is so personal in each of us, I believe, and until recently the only thing we were all told is that you get hot flashes, and it was spoken about as if we were to be pitied, or worse, laughed at; that's so limiting and cruel. But, I've never known any women who've been through it to find this particularly amusing in a cruel way; but, it IS nice when we can laugh about this with one another and at ourselves in a good-natured way!
Inasmuch as many and most os us DO experience those power surges, they occur in varying degrees in different women. Try consulting with your mother or grandmother about their expeience; that'a not to say you'll experience the same symptoms, but, like pregnancy, it can be a start.
Pay attention to your cycles; with me, the signs were having periods that lasted for up to 2-3 weeks in the beginning, then finally leveling off to a few times per month, and finally now, not having had a period for one year, I'm officially in The big "M"!
This was, my GYN explained, the body's way of preparing for the next stage of life. The first "hot flash" I experienced wasn't the freak out nor life threatening thing many women talk about. It was as though, from the scalp down, I was being immersed in a vat of something very, very warm, causing me to perspire. I recall holding still enough to truly experience it, rather than run from it or freak out. I sat very still and thought, "This is an interesting sensation, especially since I've always been cold-natured, this might be of help."
You can decide to go with it, not matter how heavy or light your experience, or you can fight it. Your bed clothes might be soaked, as might your clothing; you might likely undergo feelings you have never had, and may think you're "losing it". Well, you're not. Remember when you first got your period? Your face may've broken out, you had cramps, maybe back aches, headaches? If we could handle that, we/you can handle Menopause. Be advised about this more than anything, because this is the thing that truly angered me: THE WEIGHT GAIN that's caused by not only age, but a lack of estrogen. I, now at 55, absolutely refuse to take any prescription medication - and I never will unless my life depends upon it. I'm just fine with menopause - I deal with it, and I live alone, which can be more burdensome than anything else.
The only thing I can suggest additionally, is to pay attention to not only your physical body, but your emotional self, your spiritual self and your mental self.. they're all connected and NOT separate. And above all, talk to and confide in your GYN with this; I suggest a female doctor as well.

Good luck in the next stage of being a WOMAN!! ;)
