Switch off the lights when you don’t need them

Switching off five lights in hallways and rooms in your house when not in use can save around € 60 a year and avoid about 400 kg of CO2 emissions per year.

Avoid use of plastic bags

Plastic bags thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea creatures every year. Around 100m tonnes of plastic are produced each year of which about 10% ends up in the sea.

Recycle glass bottle

Recycling glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours. Start recycling.

Use reusable towels over tissue products

Choose washable, reusable towels or cloths over tissue products like paper towels.

Tune your ride for safety

A well-maintained car is more fuel-efficient, produces less greenhouse gas emissions and is safer.

Pack lighter suitcases environment

Pack lighter suitcases. It says that world savings would be 2 million tonnes a year if every airline passenger cut the weight of baggage to below 20 kg and bought duty free goods on arrival.

Reduce your carbon footprint

Use public transportation, carpool, walk, or bike whenever possible to avoid using your car. It will reduce your carbon footprint.

Go vegetarian to save the world

Go vegetarian. To produce a kilogram of beef, it takes, on average, 10 kg of grain and 680 liters of water.

Buy energy-efficient devices

Refrigerators and freezer units responsible for one-sixth of a home's energy use, so next time select energy-efficient models when buying a replacements.

Use blank screen saver

If you're using screen saver, use a blank (black) screen. Animated screen savers consume extra power.

Insulation saves money & climate

Better insulation of building could save 1.6 billion tons of greenhouse gases a year worldwide -- more than the industrial emissions of Japan

Send e-cards to save paper

It is estimated billion of cards end up in bins across the world every year. Save money and paper by sending e-cards.

Use cold water to wash clothes

Using cold water can save up to 80 percent of the energy required to wash clothes.

Insulating can save 1000 pounds of CO2

Just insulating a water heater can keep as many as 1,000 pounds of CO2 a year out of the atmosphere.

Unplug equipment once fully charged

Unplug equipment once fully charged. Mobile phones, shavers and electric products keep drawing electricity even when the battery is full.

Use energy-efficient appliances

Refrigerators and freezer account for one-sixth of a home's energy consumption. Go for energy-efficient models when buying replacements.

Conserve plants and animals

Every week about 20 species of plants & animals become extinct. Save them

Buy minimally packaged goods

Buy minimally packaged goods and reduce garbage by up to 30 percent

Buy energy electrical appliances

Buy energy efficient electrical appliances. One of the easiest ways to save money on your electricity bills whilst being environmentally friendly.

Use recycled paper

Use recycled paper. Making a ton of paper from recycled stock saves up to 17 trees and uses 50 per cent less water.

Avoid short car journey

Avoid short car journeys. A cold engine uses almost twice as much fuel as a warmer one. Use public transport, ride a bicycle or walk.

Fix the leak

Catching a toilet leak at its earliest stage can save a lot of water. Even a silent leak can waste from 30 to 500 gallons of water per day.

Drive smarter

Drive less aggressively. Aggressive driving decreases fuel efficiency by as much as 33% on the highway and 5% in city.

Heat water in electric kettle

Use an electric kettle to heat water. It's more energy efficient and consumes half the energy your stove takes.

Avoid screen savers

Screen savers are a big energy spends. But turning computers off and on does not take extra energy so doesn’t hesitate in switching off every time you finish using them.

Small is beautiful

Drive small car. A small car will produce less pollution than a gas-guzzling big car. It will also cheaper to run as well.

Keep your refrigerator door shut

Don't open fridge door regularly. Each minute a fridge door is open it can take three minutes for it to cool down again. Similarly, it can take half an hour for a freezer to regain its temperature once a door has been opened for just 60 seconds.

Jog in the park

Why not jog in a park instead of going on the treadmill? The calories spent are the same and you also get to save energy and, thus, the environment.

Stop Idling!

Stop idling cars and save both gas and the environment. Experts have estimated that a vehicle that idles for three minutes with the air-conditioner on burns fuel required for traveling one km.

Some good stuff here. I was raised with the Reduce, reuse, recycle mantra, but I often wonder whatever happened to reduce. People seem to lean on recycling and feel good about it, but that produces waste as well. Better to reduce.

I agree with Specificity that reduce would be ideal but sometimes it is easier to practice those things ourselves than preach to others. Especially things like vegetarianism could be difficult for people who are very used to it or may be due to living in extreme harsh climates have little choice in food matters. But I do agree with most of the tips you mentioned which are good and easy to follow. Thumbs up for a nice hub.
