If you don't how to ceramic tile a floor, you should learn, because otherwise you may make a big mistake doing so. Tile has to be installed differently from other floors because once you lay it, it's very difficult to correct if you make a mistake.

You can take it up and start over, true, but if you do so, you'll be spending hours chiseling it back up off the floor. Much better and easier is to have a good idea of what you're going to do before you start, so that you won't run into this problem.

One of the major needs of this type of job is to plan ahead of time. If you plan well, you can save both money and time. If you want to figure out how to ceramic tile your bathroom, for example, you'll first need to figure out how much tile you'll need.

To figure out the amount, measure from the center of your doorway to the opposite wall and then measure from the center of the wall perpendicular to the door and its opposing wall. This will give you two different measurements in feet.

For example, if your bathroom is 5' x 7', you multiply these two numbers together to get a total of 35. That's 35 square feet. Then, you're going to have to add a waste factor to that amount to get the total amount of tile in square feet you'll need. For example, if you are experienced at tiling floors, 5% waste factor is probably adequate.

However, if you're just beginning, you probably need 10%. Therefore, you're going to need 38.5 square feet of tile to properly tile your bathroom. Then, depending on the kind of tile you need, you'll get a certain number of square feet per box of tile from the place you buy it from.

As an example, perhaps the style of tile you've chosen gives you 11 square feet per box. What you do, then, is take the number of square feet per box and divide it into your total square footage, or 38.5. This will tell you that you need three full boxes of tile, plus an additional partial box, or four boxes total. This will give you a final amount of 44 square feet of tile that you can use.

Besides the tile, you'll also need a thinset, grout and spacers. Most bags of thinset and grout will do at least 100 square feet per bag, so that for this job, you'll only need one bag of each. One bag of spacers, too, is usually enough for a small job such as this one.

Now that you have all of your supplies, decide how you want the tile to look. Usually, your best bet is to center a tile in the middle of the room and then work outward. You can do this easily if you measure and then chalk a line at the center point.

For the next step, make up the thinset and start to spread it. If your subfloor is concrete, go ahead and spread the mix right on the floor. If your subfloor is wood, you'll first need to use Durarock or hardi-backer to stabilize things. Once you've done this, you can spread the thinset on the new surface.

Use a trowel to spread thinset and then gently place the tile on top of it. Use the spacers so that you get the right distance between the tiles, as you lay one to the next. You'll keep everything in a straight line this way.

After you've laid the tile, let it set overnight. Within about 24 hours, you can come back and grout. Mix the grout the same way as you did the thinset and spread it into the grout joints between the tiles.

Wash excess grout off the tile surface with a damp rag when you're done. Then, let the grout sit for 24 hours before you use it. Once you've done this, though, you're all set to enjoy your new floor.
