10 Damn Good Adsense Tips

With all due respect, this hub pretty much complements Courtney's Top 15 Reasons You Aren’t Making Money With Google Adsense.

Let's kick in.

If you are still struggling to make money with Google Adsense, this hub is written with you in mind.

10. Uncover what the users search for.

Today, people is dependent on search engines to look for information or seek solution. As a content writer, it's your obligation to provide internet users with the most relevant answer based on their search intent - keyword. Yes, keyword research is often the overlooked aspect of making money online.

Whether it's "the perfect accommodation in North Poles" or "Is Adam Lambert a gay?", understanding what the users search for (and provide the most relevant contents) is the prerequisite to making money with Google Adsense.

9. Write for both your readers and search engines.

Once you uncover the search term that the users are more likely to use, you need to learn how to write search-engine friendly copy that focuses on targeting that specific keyword, bearing in mind that keyword stuffing is to be avoided at all cost lest you anger the God of Google.

First write your article naturally without thinking about search engines. Once it's done, tweak it with relevant keywords. To Adsense-optimize your page, make sure your primary keyword is present in the opening and ending paragraph.

8. Place ads where your readers will notice.

You certainly need to know where to strategically place your ad to have a better click-through-rate. Eye-tracking analysis has shown that users are more likely to engage with ad placements that appear in the upper left-hand corner of a page.

Personally I have greater success with 336x300 and horizontal link unit when placed at the top-left within the content and "above the fold" replacing (if possible) the navigation menu respectively.

And vertical banner on the sidebar is probably one of the worst placement if you ask me. Blogtimize now!

7. Less is More.

Refrain from having too many ads. This is probably the classic newbies mistake and yet many seem to be oblivious to the fact that displaying more ads doesn't necessarily improve the probability of more clicks.

In such cases, unless you target your keywords well, poorly targeted traffic that either won't click your ad (social traffic) or won't convert well for advertisers, you're in danger of being smart-priced, resulting in you getting only a tiny fraction of what you’d normally earn per click.

6. Stay on target.

People who search for "gardening tools" aren't interested in "dog food" and vice versa. If the ads that appears don't match the contents, they either won't click the ads or won't convert well for the advertisers.

To stay on target, use section targeting. It's an extremely useful tool to suggest which section of the page you'd like Google to target. Ad relevancy optimization using section targeting helps to ensure ads are as targeted and relevant as possible.

Which is a win-win for both you as a publisher and advertisers.

5. Channel testing.

As in everything else, it's important to measure which ad unit convert well and which ones don't. So you can make a smart decision to remove the ads from non-performing sites or re-organize the non-effective ad units by changing the ad placement, format or color.

Channel is the perfect tool to test the effectiveness of your ads and what will work best for your site. You can create a custom channel with a unique name to each of the ad unit to easily track it in your Adsense report.

4. Blend your ads.

While some may argue that making your ads stand out from the rest of page helps to draw your readers' attention, matching the background color and titles of your ads to the background color and the link color of your site will always generate more clicks.

Many associate blue with clickable links so blue is still the optimal link color. Still some sort of testing is recommended to see which one works best for your site.

3. Know your keywords

If you aren't making money with Google Adsense, probably you're targeting keywords with low cost-per-clicks (CPCs). The Cost Per Click is the amount of money an advertiser is willing to pay Google for a click on their link. The higher the CPC, the more you as a publisher will get. Of course you will only get a fraction of what the advertiser is paying.

Keep in mind that we are NOT looking for keywords that has a high search volume and high CPC. Usually, it's going to be extremely hard to rank well for those keywords. In general, using Google Adwords Keyword Tool and SpyFu, I opt for keywords that have over 1000 - 3000 searches with CPC over $1.

2. Know your competition

Competition analysis isn't a science. There is no sure-fire formula to study your competition. A mixture of educated guess and analytical skills that comes with experience.

What most people do is to type the keyword into Google and see how many competing pages it returns but this method is over simplified. It doesn't really tell you the whole picture.

But those who read One Week Marketing DO know.

1. Search traffic converts, social traffic doesn't.

While social traffic comes in big numbers, they don’t stay and more importantly they don’t click your Adsense.

Search engine traffic, on the other hand, comes with a specific intent. If they couldn’t find what they wanted, chances were they would click on your Adsense as the search continued. As such, search traffic is highly targeted, relevant and more qualified.

Suffice to say, the higher you rank on Google, the more organic traffic you'll get and thus, the more money you can make with Google Adsense.

Oh by the way, if you haven't had One Week Marketing in your arsenal yet. Stop complaining that you don't make money with Adsense.
