How To Speak German

Knowing the origins of a language can help you understand it and the people who speak it. If you are to learn German you can benefit from knowing its relationship to other languages including your own.

German is a part of the Indo-European language family from the branch of Germanic languages that incorporates Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Dutch and English and other languages in the European expanse and in some cases further a field due to colonisation.

It is believed to have originated from the people called the Kurgans who were a semi-nomadic culture that lived around four thousand BC on the steppes of what is now Russia. As the tribes spread through Europe and began to populate other areas they inevitably encountered different tribes and races that were conquered or assimilated along with their languages and culture. As the tribes moved across Europe the language of these people changed and adapted adding new words from the tribes that were absorbed. Scholars have found a direct link and it was eventually divided into three main branches now called North Germanic, West Germanic and East Germanic.

The form of the German language along with English and Netherlandic belong to the West Germanic branch that has subsequently evolved into the modern German language of today.

The similarities in the languages of this family are not as easy to detect as with other language families such as the romance languages of the Italic family and the distinct separation of most of the structure makes them more or less intelligible to each other. Over one hundred million people speak the German language as a first language and through colonisation it is the native or official language of not only Germany but also a number of countries. It is widely taught through the schooling systems of many different countries in the western world along with the unrelated languages of French and Spanish.
