Help Me Review Every Las Vegas Hotel

The Simple Math

634,274 searches on Yahoo (overture) for Las Vegas Hotel related searches. Yahoo has about 20% market-share, so we multiply it by 5 to get 3,171,370 searches in July. Now a good ranking site on search engines can get 3%-10% of the market. So we estimate 5%. That's 158,568 visitors a month potential from search engines.

So how much is this traffic worth? The top bid on Yahoo now, is $1.88 for Las Vegas Hotels. Yahoo and Google typically pay publishers 60%-70% of the ppc. Travel is a great category where the ppc paid to publishers is high. So this means a publisher earns $1.13 for every click. Now this is just an estimate, but probably pretty close. The click through rate on ppc ads, also known as contextual ads is pretty high when the traffic comes from search engines. It's estimated that Digg users click on ads .25% vs over 10% for visitors from search engines. That's a 40X difference. So it's really important to get these visitors from search engines.

With 10% click through rate, that's 15,856 clicks at $1.13 for $17,886 dollars in revenue per month and multiply it by 12 and it's $214,638 dollars per year for one city worth of hotel reviews from search engines. Assume that we can drive double the revenue from word of mouth and referral links, which brings us to $430K in revenue per year.

To create $100 million dollar company, the annual revenues need to be about $10 million. It is reasonable for a company to be worth 10X revenues. So, now there are about 20,000 more cities in the US with an estimated $200 million a year spent on ppc. Digg gets a reported 1 million users per day. If each Digg user created one hotel review, in theory, we could have every hotel in the world reviewed in one day. A good travel review site can do revenues in the tens of millions per year. All people need to do is write a good detailed review of hotels.

How Digg Users Could Work Together to Create Great and Highly Profitable Websites

The Goal

To produce a lot of content on one subject that creates a very valuable company in a few days.

How it works

We pick a commercial topic for each user to create a piece of content about. In this case we picked Las Vegas Hotels, but it could have been a product to review or a another commercial topic. So, each user then pens a Las Vegas Hotel review. It's good if more than one author reviews the same hotel. Even if there were ten really thoughtful reviews of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, that would actually be really good.

The reviews should be part editorial and part encyclopedic with lots of facts. If you decide to participate in this test, think wikipedia meets personal opinion. At the bottom of this page I made a list of Las Vegas Hotels. Pick one and write a review. I bet if we get 3,000 hotel reviews written, that this repository will become the go to resource for Las Vegas Hotels. If you don't feel comfortable writing about a Las Vegas Nevada hotel, write about one from another city.

Why it will work

Two simple reasons. First, when a lot of quality content is aggregated on a topic it creates a valuable resource for users. People will then refer the information source to their friends which will drive a substantial amount of traffic. Secondly, this same body of content is exactly what search engines like. As people contribute and the body grows, so will the referrals from search engines. So much so, that you will likely see a page from this site on the first page of Yahoo, Google and MSN for a key phrase like "Las Vegas Hotels."

Why I thought of this

After browsing HubPages, I saw a new Hot Hotels of Hollywood review published every few days. I imagined that this author plans to keep going and build a large set of content of hot hotels for travelers looking to party around the country. The hotel reviews are very well targeted to contextual ads and entertaining so that people will link to them and send additional traffic. While I don't think Digg authors will be naturally inclined to add a T&A rating, they can still produce valuable content.

I often hear that the Digg audience isn't valuable. Only a few people contribute and the users don't click on ads. I thought if the Digg community was channeled or directed to a topic that they could turn out a $100 Million Dollar company in a matter of a few days. All the Digg users would have to do is pick a topic and each contribute for one day. The content would be so valuable since the quantity and quality would be so great that millions in revenue could easily be generated.
