False Advertising - Pet Food Recall How Many Dogs and Cats Have Died
63This is a question from one of my readers....
Hi Susan,
You said you have reads lots of emails from people who have lost pets or have pets that are sick. Do you have a real tally? I am tired of the media saying 14 cats have died and I have heard other stories and it seems like the number should be much, much higher. You seem to have your finger on the pulse of this issue. We have to find out the real numbers and make the media aware of the real information. Not what these corporations are putting out there. Thanks for your informative website.
I've received emails about HUNDREDS of dog and cat deaths. I couldn't even begin to calculate the number of messages on the comments section of my 200 + web pages. It's going to take me several days to sort through the RSS feed of the comments to get the final answer.
Please watch for my "In Memory" pages for our lost loved ones.
Thought you would like to know. If you have lost a beloved pet or have one sick or one that has been sick please send an email with your name, address and phone number to me at asksusanpeters@hotmail.com . I want to be able to do something about this outrage!
Thank you,
Susan Peters

I just lost a very sweet old pomeranian. I had switched to canned food a few months ago because he had a hard time chewing dry food. Although he was old and frail, he did not seem acutley sick. Until the morning I found him standing, unable to move and letting at a pitiful cry. He was confused, could not eat or drink, and within hours, it was obvious he was dying. The symptoms pointed to renal failure which I thought was due to age. Now in hind site, I will never know. After 2 days of suffering, we decided to put him down.
This was just weeks before the recall. It upsets me to know that I may have inadvertently killed my dog.
Nikko, I am sooo sorry. I just didn't know.

Dear Susan,
Thanks for your very informative web site. My pug *Sammy* got ill last week . My husband, thank GOD he was home from overseas work noticed that Sammy has not touched his food at all and drank water like crazy, this was thursday. Same day we brought him to the Vet and sure enough, it is beginning kidney failure. He was given IV right away and was place on KD diet but it was scary to see him deteriorate quick, the best thing is that we were able to catch it on time. I am right now making his food although right this minute, his appetite is not back to normal just yet. He's becoming more active each day and his pee is back to normal.
I hope in due time you'd be able to have a tally of how many pets died and how many got ill. The last six years, his food of choice is Ol' Roy and 2 pouches a day is all he needs. My Sammy is a very low maintenance PUG, always been healthy , had never been sick and always been hyper active until last week. yeap!!! his pouches are confirmed to be in the recall list with confirmed serial numbers.
I do not know when I could go back to buying wet dog food !!! obviously I am now one PARANOID pet lover. Thanks again for all that you do and more power to your site.

The media and menu foods are both claiming the dryed foods are safe but has anyone actually tested them? I have been feeding three diffrent varities (dried foods)of Iams food to my pets. I have already changed their foods however, I am still concerned with damage that may have already been done to them. Please help ease my fears!! Billie
I also fear that the dry foods are somehow poisoned too. They keep insisting that the dry foods are not affected by this recall, but I would not be surprised if they end up reporting that some dry foods are contaminated as well. Ugh!!! This is a nightmare!
I had a Shitz zu (HAD).she was on mighty dog food pouches.she got so sick a week ago and just yesterday 3/27/07 had to put her down. She was our life.Only weighing 6lbs. She had kidney failure .she got so sick.the vet said it was the food because she had never been sick before. I hope they get to the bottom of this it has to STOP!!!!!!!!!!
Today there is news that at least one dry food is affected also. Ironically, it is what a veterinarian may prescribe for a cat having certain issues, like diabetes. That is what happened with one of my cats and not long after starting on this prescribed food (Hill's Prescription M/D), he was dead. We miss you, Shadow.
I have been giving my dogs treats that I just noticed were Alpo Grillz or something to that affect. While I was walking my dogs, I gave them a treat and a few minutes later my one dog was coughing and threw it up. That's when I realized what I was giving them. I have stopped but am concerned that soon the treats will be on the list or already are. There is so much that is being contradicted and you never know if you're getting the right information. Has anyone else had this problem? My dogs seem alright but they haven't gotten a lot of these treats and I have more bags of them. I just don't want to do them any harm.
I have 4 dogs, 2 Dachshunds, 1 beagle and 1 Basset. The Basset is not acting good and acting like she is dehydrated and has a lack of energy at times and we feed her Sam's "Origonal" from Sma's Warehouse. I real that Ol'Roy is in the recall (walmarts brand)and "Original" is Sam's brand. I am up late and very very worried that that this food is bad. I have been reding and watching the news because I worry about other peoples loved pets. We had a really nice yound Dachshud that we lost with the Swifter floor cleaner. (only thing that the we and the vet could figure out) We also almost lost our cat to that.
I went to Sam's website and i can not tell on the pic of the bag does anyone know? We take the 50lbs. bags and dump them in the big food bin so I do not have the bag.
Thank you for your help and I hope and pray our loved pets will be okay

I have a 7 year old golden named CISCO. We give him canned food 3 times a week for a "treat". I usually buy APLO cuts in gravy. Typically I purchase it at Wallmart. A week ago we had to bring him in because he stopped eating, and had low energy. He had an ultrasound and they found his liver was enlarged and he had high liver enzymes. Indicitive of liver cancer. We had a biopsy done to make sure it is liver cancer. It has now spread to all his organs and the vet said he would be surprised if he made it a few months on prednisone. My question is this........ SINCE THE ALPO CANNED DOG FOOD IS TAINTED WITH A MELAMINE A PLASTIC THAT IS FOUND IN FERTELIZER AND PLASTIC AND THE LIVER DIGESTS TOXINS COULD THIS BE THE CAUSE OF MY GOLDENS CANCER??? DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS TYPE OF SITUATION?? IF SO PLEASE EMIAL ME: LINDSEY.SARRACK@USFOOD.COM
We are so upset and angry because of this. Cisco is the love of our life.
Our family doesn't watch much t.v. and actually have much time to even sit and absorb a news paper. I learned of the pet food recall through a friend but not soon enough. I am absolutely livid about the fact that I have gone out of my way to make special trips to our Vet's office to purchase Eucanuba dog food, which I have paid nearly double the price of the other brands to ensure my pets good health. Only to now find that it was their food that killed her? There needs to be some accountability by food and drug administrations to oversee the standards of any item that is to be consumed. Whether it's humans or animals. The sickening manner in which my "good friend" suffered, would without hesitation, had been a just reason for implimenting some kind of emergency panel to investigate into how this tragic incident went unnoticed.
jake was our little porkie ,shar-pei I had 2 put him to sleep last sunday his kidneys were failing he could not find this place . broke my heart . Menu foods has not called me back.I had called 2 times, a comment made by one of there representive was 2 take the pouched dog food to my vet 2 have analysis !! DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT 2 SAY ????????

also posted pet food what about are dead pets # 97
hi everyone, it has been a sad long journey for everyone !!! i should know also i lost my 4 yr old female rott on feb 14th 2007,worst of all it was my 10th anniversary, they had to put her down there was no way to save her her kidneys and liver and pancreas ws so bad they could not repair anything , she went without food for 8 day , the verts even tried baby food but with no such luck she could not hold it down , her name was" stormy" a very big strong, loving & HEALThY DOG until about 10 days before she got laid to rest, i know that dry food is not on the list BUT DEeP IN MY HEART i know it is made with the same products & i had a tainted bad she had all the same symptoms , & i mean all !! the vets had no excuse what coud have caused any of this to a young healthy dog , this happened right befre the recall came out so nobody knew about it at that time . ( recall came out about 7 -14 days after she died) she ate the same food all the time always playful then one day , nothing ...no food , puking , runny stools excessive drinking water & urinating, leathergy it went on like this for 8 days would not even touch a steak or a bone i tried everything to get her to eat , dr said she would die after about 10 days anyways for non food consumption , her insides were so bad it was non fixable , no reason no cure no explaination, then this big recall... my kids husband & i are so sadly shook up , she has been part of our family & even slept on my bed ( 115lb ) . my 2 yr ,4 year 8, & 9 year old were devistated & wanted to know why stormy died casue she was not sick mommy what happened ?? i had no reason or answer& all i could do was to look into the tears in there eyes and say she is in doggy heaven now & god will protect her and make her better now . now i have a 550.00 vet bill i cannot afford , and making payments on for a mistake that the dog food company COULD HAVE PREVENTED if they had warned & checked the saftey of our pets food right from the start !it is so sad that these companies get away with these types of salmanellia & food poisioning and not have to pay out a dime or feel anybodys heart stricken sadness or cries because there loved ones are gone, they just put up money and move on while us & we the consumer have to suffer & pay the deadly price of there mistakes !!!!!!
On March 20th, I noticed that my 8 month old Papillon was acting strangely, his head was wobbling, as if he were too tired to hold it up. I put him on the floor, and he could barley stand. We rushed him to the emergency vet clinic, where he was treated for poisoning. The vet could not find anything remarkable in his system, or in all of the tests that were run (including blood and kidney tests). I had to leave him at the clinic overnight, and was told that there was a good possibility that he may not make it through the night. I was lucky, and come home with my dog the next day along with a vet bill for $1000.00.
The vet said that I was very lucky that my dog didn't suffer any permenant kidney damage. I was feeding him Hill's Science Diet Puppy Food, along with some Nutro Natural Canned Puppy food mixed in. I have since switched to Medical Developpment Canned Food, however with one of the Medical wet foods being recalled I am really concerned. I have 2 cats and another dog. They are all eating Medical, wet and dry. It is only sold by vets and is very expensive!
Has anyone had a similar experience with a very acute onset of poisioning??
What can I feed them if not Medical??
question--I had to put down my dog sadie on early 2006. I know this well before this wheat gluten problem, but is it possible there was a problem earlier than reported. My female dog was very healthy late 2005 and all of a sudden she started to drink a lot of water and urinating uncontrollably. she wo;ld not drink or eat for weeks. Tests showed she had kidney problems. Does anyone have info on earlier dog kidney problems??
If anyone can tell me what the symptoms are and how to have our pet food checked to see if it is tainted please e-mail me at cnngibson@yahoo.com we lost our Yorkie and my dad is extremely devastated and needing answers. Thank you.
I am the mother of 5 shih tzus but now am down to only 4. I lost my oldest girl, Brinna, about 4 weeks ago. She suddenly became ill and could not move. Work had been very slow and funds were not available for emergency vets. After force feeding her for several days and massaging her muscles she seemed to improve so I changed her food to soft pouches and Iams canned foods. Two days later I woke to find her dead the doorway of my bedroom. Her treats consisted of Ol Roy Beef Sticks and Dog Biscuits. I have given all of them the treats for months and months. My youngest grandson who has downs would lick each treat before giving them to the doggies. Giving them their treats was a favorite thing for him when he played with them. Now I'm even fearful of him being harmed from tainted pet foods. I will look for homemade treats now. None of my other doggies have shown signs of illness yet but I'm watching them closely. We gave her a nice burial in our backyard and my grandson helped to place the dirt over her and line the grave with small stones. We placed a small crystal cross upon her grave. He goes to her grave and points to the ground calling her name. We all miss her.
My german shepherd of 10 years died last night for no reason. He had been having trouble with urinating and seemed to be uncomfortable. He didnt seem so sick and I thought if he was having trouble going pee I would take him the vet tomarrow. He was eating Iams mini chunks. I bought them at Walmart and was told that it was safe. Ive lost my best friend in the world and my heart is broke. Its hard to explain to my four year old that he will not wake up again. We will bury him today.
I am so sorry!
My Dog (child) China died April 27th. 2007. She was 13 years old and healthy. About 2 months ago she stopped eating her Alpo Prime Cuts. I would pratically have to force feed her. Then she would throw up. All she wanted to do is drink lots of water. Then I heard of the recall of dog foods but I checked with Purina website and they assured us they were not part of the recall. I continued to feed China the Alpo Primecuts but used a different flavor. Then two weeks later they recalled China's food. I was able to get her to eat rice chicken and veggies. I was noticing she really drank alot of water and had me up at all hours of the night to go pee. She also would take a few steps and her back legs were giving out on her. I would have to go out and help her walk back to the house. She was constantly panting. I thought maybe she was just getting old and her poor little body just couldn't get around like it use to. But she was running around playing a few weeks ago. It was happening so fast. Then last week I noticed blood in her stool and she was not holding down any food or water. I called the vet and they told me she was dieing and I could bring her in but they were going to put her down. I just couldn't do it. That night I slept on the floor with her all night wrapped in my arms. At 5:30 the next morning she gasp for her last breath while I held her crying. I just don't know how I am going to make it without her.
I'm so sorry.

PLEASE, IF ANYBODY CAN PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING TO ANYONE ELSE,DO SO NOW!!!!!!!
My beautiful cat (healthy 9 years) just had to be put down. She was on Tops Companion Brand wet food. It happened very fast. She started vomiting occasionally, then more often and drinking water a lot (she never did like water much). Then stopped eating and was tired and couldn't get up. I did not wait for her to die, but took her to the vet, who said she would have died from starvation in a few more days anyway.
Awful.
Nanette,
I am so sorry. How awful. I've joined the Class Action Lawsuit against this company and I am going to become involved in the National Boycott, too.
June 17 - June 23 is the National Pet Food Boycott. Too many pets have died due to these pet foods and we are standing up to the pet food producers. Feed a jar of baby food if you don't have time to cook. That should hold you over until the boycott has passed.

Tarzan my bengal cat had been screaming during his pee and it was bloody. He was loosing weight and hair. I thought that it was from the neigbors weed killer...but the vet said it was just my breed of cat and that he needed to eat cat food that didn't have ash in it...so I began searching for such food and found something but can't remeber and I was to give him vit.C once a week it worked. Then I stop the vit.C and he still was OK. So it was the food.....not anything else. Not the neigbors weed killer. I have since found tarzan a new home and hope he is still well...not sure...
Tarzan
What were you feeding?
Susan
Hi. Our care is 1.5 years old and lately hasn't been doing anything at all - except sitting or lying and sleeping - he seems distant - doesn't want to be petted and just not the usual cat.
we recentlly bought a new bag of special kitty dry food, (about two weeks ago) and shortly after that was when he started acting sick or differently. He's a neutered inside cat and my wife thought it might be his hormones. Until we began thinking it could be the dry food.
Luckily we have some canned alpo cat feed - made in 2003 and we're feeding him that now.
I'll put this discussion up on my blog at http://american-crossroads-mall.com/blog and see what the people thiink there.
Does anyone know if special kitty dry from walmart is among those recalled?
Thanks John Hansen majorhart@sbcglobal.net
John,
Wal Mart Special Kitty began the recall list and has stayed on it ever since.

My cat Jerrry recently became very ill and has been in emergency care for a week now. He had a blocked urinary tract and still is not able to urinate on his own and continues to pass large amounts of blood through his cathiter. The vet immediately asked what he was eating and informed me it was his pet food that made him ill. Jerry had been eating Purina Cat Chow and occassional Meow Mix that he was sneaking from my dad. I'm not sure which is the culprit, but I am devastated now in reading about what these pet foods contain. I am a single mom and my vet bills are already topping 2,000 not to mention the heartwrenching grief suffered by me and my young son...and the unbearable agony my precious friend is in - all so big corporations can earn more. They are literally making a killing!
Kudorio,
Bless your heart. I am so sorry for Jerry and your family. Both Purina Cat Chow and Meow Mix have a Class Action filed against them for false advertising. Both cat foods advertise they are a healthy choice for your pet when they are actually toxic to cats.

Poodles are not the sweet family dog you might expect. Check into the breed of any dog to make sure the nature of the dog meets the needs of your family.

My dog has had undiagnosed blood in her urine for several months (i.e., UTI and bladder/kidney stones ruled out already). Until now, we didn't suspect food. She eats Iams DRY (mini chunks). I have reported it to Iams and to the FDA. Urine = kidneys. (The current recall is related to a poison that causes kidney failure and death at the reported concentration of 40 parts per million... perhaps at lower concentrations the kidneys bleed but don't "fail".)
www.petconnection.com has a database for people to report their pet sickness and death related to the Menu Foods recall. As of the 24th, MORE THAN 1,300 pets are reported dead. NOTE: Those cases have not been confirmed, they are self-reported cases. There will always be a lag time between word-of-mouth reports and proven cases, thus the news media will always be way behind the curve.
