Cardiologist James H. O’Keefe and his colleagues from University of Missouri have reported their findings in the upcoming Sept. 11 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
The researchers have pointed in that paper that there are many studies that shows the healthy benefits of moderate drinking and in their study they wanted to see how much drinking is needed to offer healthy benefits.
They found that one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men is sufficient and offers enough benefits for health, but beyond that drinking becomes detrimental to one’s health. Some may become misled with healthy benefits of alcohol so may end up drinking more which will produce a counter effect. O’Keefe warns, more is not only better, it is harmful as well.
What is one drink? O’Keefe and colleagues say the following: “a drink is a 12-ounce bottle of beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled liquor which all have between 13 and 15 grams of alcohol.”
The University of Missouri researchers warn the doctors against offering advice to people to drink despite the health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption.
They warn that even moderate drinking is a slippery slope which may lead to alcoholism or difficult to control later.
I couldn’t access this particular journal in American College of Cardiology, but this issue may be available in your local university.
We all know moderation in drinking is the key, but if the researchers are able to quantify how much is enough, we can use them as a guide. I doubt this study however will deter drinkers from drinking less than two drinks, they will drink more. If we just need health benefits, there are plenty of safe sources than drinking.

It is better to take in moderation, but with alcohol few drinks doesn't seem to be enough and we end up drinking too much.

I heard a news report not long ago about how the negative effects of alcohol affect women to a much higher extent than men. I believe it is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. I drink at times, but try not to over-indulge, especially as I come from a family with many addictions.
