How To Destroy A Pickup Truck, Part III

So, if you have been following along in this series, then you will recognize that this is a pretty severe about-face in the destruction of this 1983 Chevy S-10.

So, I had this Pontiac Fiero engine cradle and a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission... and I had this engine adapter from V8 Archie to mate a small-block V8 to a Fiero transmission...

Well, I measured things and found that the front mounting points of the engine cradle happened to be a perfect fit for the truck's rear-axle leaf-spring mounts. The axles ended up within an inch of the center of the wheelwell. I mean, the damn thing matched up like GM had planned it that way from the start.

So, I set about the task of mounting the mid-engine drivetrain to the frame behind the truck's cab where the truck bed would go. Why not, right?

Check out the photos below. You can see, despite the low resolution, that it fit pretty well. I had to modify the framerails a bit, and in one place welded in a stiffening arch. The plan was to incorporate upper A-arms in the suspension with coilover springs, rather than the Fiero's MacPherson strut design. But, that never happened, because this project died when I ended up selling my house and moving to another state for a job and to make a Wife, temporarily, out of my current Ex-Wife.

What became of this truck? Why, that may be the best part. The engine and key mechanical parts were removed for use in future mad-scientist projects. I hauled the rest of the truck to a storage facility (you know, a Lock and Leave type place) where my brother happened to have a small warehouse forklift. We cut the ENTIRE TRUCK into smaller pieces with a Sawzall, and then put the ENTIRE TRUCK into a dumpster, piece by piece. Now that was a good time.
