To prevent an excess of cholesterol from building up:
a. Reduce the total amount of cholesterol and fat (especially saturated fat) in the diet. There is a "good cholesterol" and "bad cholesterol". We should have about one part of good cholesterol for every two parts of bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol is that which is deposited in the arteries and block the passage of blood. Good cholesterol helps clean the arteries, taking along with it the harmful cholesterol to the liver to be destroyed. Food that contain Bad Cholesterol: egg yolk (high in cholesterol), butter, some shellfish, chicken skin, meats, and some dairy products.
- Cook with unsaturated oils like: corn oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, and peanut oil.
- Eat a generous amount of fish and fish oil, especially those from cold waters such as: tuna, cod, and salmon. These fish oils are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids called Omega-3.
Omega-3 is rich in two substances :
EPA and DHA important elements for lowering the harmful cholesterol level as well as that of triglycerides, thus decreasing the danger of artery blockage.
Consume olive oil which contains Omega-9 unsaturated fatty acids or evening primrose oil which are high in Omega-6. The consumption of these oils significantly reduce harmful cholesterol. This is great advice. I've used flax seeds and oats to bring down my cholesterol. You have to stick to it but it really works.
