If you want your site to show up in search results

Most webpages that you find by searching on Yahoo, Google and MSN were discovered by automated programs that crawl the internet by following links.  When one of these bots finds a link to your site it will then begin to crawl your site.  The more they find links from other sites on a related topic to your site, the more "votes" your site recieves.  As you expect, the more "votes", the higher your site will rank on search engines.

Getting good quality links takes knowledge, hard work, and patience.  Here are keys to running a link campaign yourself, and even better to outsource link campaigns to firms to follow these guidlines.

  1. Get one way links that are permanent.  This means to avoid reciprocal linking.  It also means to avoid  three way or multiway link swaps.  These are tricks of the day and won't add value.
  2. Get links from sites that are on different class C ip addresses.  It's believed that links from the same ip address or server aren't as valued by search engines.
  3. Get links from sites where the owners are different.  Don't spend time getting a bunch of links from sites owned by the same person.  These types of links are also worth less.
  4. Don't pay to be in a directory for the link value.  A good link does have value, but pay to be in a directory for the traffic, not the link value.
  5. Don't buy pagerank when looking for links, it better to pay for theme.
  6. Cultivate natural links by producing great interesting content.  This is also known as link bait.

I have had google drop a site from the index for a 3 way link scheme. Fortunately we were back within a month of cleaning our act up. The above advice is good, but I would refer anybody with more interest to http://www.webmasterworld.com/. It is the definitive resource for this sort of thing.

How come this Hub is only rated at a 47?Daniel.

Probably because it doesn't have enough links. I actually think i'm a bit lucky to get a 47 for this Hub. I made it at a time we were experimenting quite a bit. So it's a bit short, not that unique and really not that useful. Should I unpublish it or does it have some value?

It does have some value, gives a decent general best practices. You may wish to add a bit more content.

I've changed my belief on link campaigns. In that content only provides value if it provides enough value for someone to link to it. To artificially gather links is a waste of time. What authors should do is interlink their own content and hubs and that will provide enough juice if done properly.
